ARCHIVED - Águilas Town Hall cancels all guided tours and official events - but the castle remains open
Águilas takes precautions against the spread of the Covid-19 virus
The Town Hall and tourist office of Águilas in the south-west of the Region of Murcia has announced that due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic throughout Spain all Town Hall events have been suspended indefinitely.
The decision has been made, as in countless other municipalities, in an effort to slow down the spread of the virus, which by Thursday morning had been diagnosed in at least 22 patients in the Region of Murcia and around 2,500 in Spain as a whole, with 63 related fatalities. Águilas Town Hall is thus responding quickly to the message from the regional government on Wednesday advising against all events at which more than 50 people are likely to be present, and the suspension of official events will last for at least 2 weeks.
Among the events affected are all of those scheduled in the Auditorium Infanta Elena and the Casa de Cultura, the courses and workshops in the Centro Municipal de la Mujer, a series of conferences related to innovation in education and the “Rovermur” scout meeting which was scheduled for this coming weekend.
At the same time all guided tours and group visits to museums and routes in the town have been suspended, although the castle of Águilas remains open for individual and family visitors (NOT for large groups).
Elsewhere, the study rooms and libraries have also been closed, the weekly market has been cancelled, the Casa de la Cultura, municipal auditorium, sports centres, Centro de Atención Temprana and the Centro Municipal de la Tercera Edad (centre for the elderly) will be closed for at least a fortnight: gymnastics, swimming and choir practice for the elderly are also suspended.
For the time being the processions of Semana Santa are still going ahead, but preliminary events during Lent have been cancelled by the brotherhoods organizing them.
The Town Hall also reminds residents and visitors that the measures announced are merely preventative: as yet there have been no cases of Covid-19 in Águilas.
For more local news, events and visiting information go to the home page of Águilas Today.
At present it has been confirmed that 27 patients have been diagnosed with COvid-19 in the Region of Murcia.
Please follow Murcia Today on Facebook to keep up to date with all the latest updates locally for the Region of Murcia and the main information for the rest of Spain: https://www.facebook.com/MurciaToday/.
Please note, Facebook is limiting the number of posts we are able to make in local groups, and the sheer volume of incoming information is overwhelming, so all updates and cancellations of events etc in the Murcia region will be posted on this main page and may not be shared into many local groups. PLEASE help to support the flow and sharing of information by following this page and sharing the information into groups to which you have access.

12 to 27 – 11 new cases reported on Wednesday including two in whom the virus was contracted within the Region of Murcia. Five more on Thursday.
What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
