Daily infections, hospitalisations and intensive care admissions have all decreased across Spain

It’s been a worrying few weeks in Spain as the coronavirus data continues to see-saw, and while the experts warn that the seventh wave of the pandemic is far from over, the latest figures from the Ministry of Health are encouraging.

After spiralling at the beginning of the summer, the cumulative incidence rate is decreasing by considerable leaps each week, and while hospitalisations are still far too high, this pressure has also eased somewhat in recent days.

Coronavirus infections

The Ministry of Health in Spain registered 72,704 new cases of coronavirus on Friday July 22, of which 34,342 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.

This is an increase on the 41,683 infections registered in the last health update of July 20 and brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,204,863.

Cumulative incidence rate

On the other hand, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has fallen 223 points since the last report to stand at 858.24 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 1,245 cases, followed by septuagenarians (881.01), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (639.82).

The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 391 cases to 326, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.

Andalusia continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate by far, a trend which it has maintained throughout the seventh wave (331.62 cases). Eleven regions remain above the 1,000-case threshold while Navarra is the highest in the country, with 2873,33 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

Hospitalisations and fatalities

There are currently 10,489 patients hospitalised throughout Spain for Covid (down from 11,579 on Tuesday) while 513 patients are being treated for more serious conditions in the ICU (down from 547.)

A further 518 Covid-related fatalities have been reported in the last week, bringing the global death toll from coronavirus in Spain to 110,187 people.

Vaccination data

As of July 26, 92.7% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid. Which means that a total of 39,125,695 people have now received two doses.

So far, 39,249,942 have received at least one dose, 93.0% of the population over 12 years of age, as well as 55.2% of children between 5 and 11 years of age, a total of 2,107,411.

In addition, 1,721,866 younger children, 45.1%, are now fully inoculated.

As for the booster jab, or third Covid vaccine, 92.6% of those over 70 years have received it, as well as 92.8%. These figures drop slightly for the younger age groups, and 81.4% of people over the age of 40 have been administered a booster.
