Andalusia's Ministry of Education has begun an investigation after the two-year-olds were found alone on a busy street

Two toddlers managed to escape a nursery school in Almeria on toy motorcycles on Easter Monday, travelling 300 metres before being found by a passerby at traffic lights (pictured).

The youngsters reportedly left the day centre via an external door which had been left open without any of the staff noticing, prompting an investigation by the Education Inspectorate of the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Education and Families.

Government sources have confirmed that the Inspectorate is "investigating the facts and the appropriate measures will be taken".

According to one of the children's mothers, the toddlers walked through several streets until they were spotted at a traffic light near a children's entertainment centre by a woman, who picked them up and immediately alerted the National Police.

The mother claims police then handed the children over to two monitors who were arriving at the scene at the time, and filed a report with the Minors' Prosecutor's Office.

It has since transpired the nursery was being staffed by a sub-contracted firm with it being Easter Week, a company that normally takes care of the toddlers during holidays and on Friday afternoons.

The Education Inspectorate has requested a full report on the incident from the subcontractor and has confirmed that the "majority" of parents of children at the nursery have submitted a letter requesting further information and demanding increased security measures.

"This is a very serious matter and something that cannot be repeated. "It is not enough to say that 'thank God nothing has happened' on this occasion", said the mother of one of the youngsters, stressing that the problem is "not with the nursery school, its director or regular teachers, but with this government subcontractor that does not take responsibility and does not see any negligence on the part of the monitors.

"Most of us parents do not want this company in charge of our children," she added, and warned that they are "not ruling out taking action through the courts when the time comes".
