ARCHIVED - Almost 45,000 Brits, locals and other tourists pack the streets for Benidorm Fancy Dress Party
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
According to organisers of one of the biggest British parties in Spain, attendance figures surpassed those of 2019
Benidorm was awash with colour and music as almost 45,000 people, the majority British, descended on the coastal resort's Rincón de Loix streets for Benidorm Fancy Dress Party, now in its 25th year.
The mammoth event traditionally attracts tens of thousands of people and has become a major attraction amongst British tourists, but this year, organisers believe record numbers attended Thursday's event, surpassing the estimated 35,000 in 2019.
Hundreds of tourists donned costumes, from doctors, nurses and soldiers to 'pink ladies' and farmhouse animals, and bars were overflowing as revellers hit the streets hours before the much-anticipated parade of 16 floats accompanied by bands, DJs and dance groups.
The festival, which saw thousands of tourists flock from the UK and other European countries, was born in the Sinatras pub with around 40 participants.
Local businessman Manuel Nieto, founder of the festival, had already announced that this year they hoped to surpass the figures for 2019, and the goal appears to have been achieved with streets such as Mallorca and Gerona literally bursting with partygoers.
In addition to the parade and bands, giant paellas and barbecues were prepared on Levante beach where there was live music and as many as 10,000 commemorative T-shirts were handed out.
Benidorm Town Hall reinforced security with an additional 50 local and national police officers in uniform and in plain clothes on the ground, and by air, with drones or from the rooftops of some buildings.
Sadly, a violent row erupted at a property in the Rincon de Loix area at around 10.30am on Thursday, during which a 68-year-old Irishman was stabbed to death. A British man, who the deceased had been living with, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide over the stabbing and is now expected to face a murder charge.
The 62-year-old detainee, who sustained less serious stab wounds, is being treated at Villajoyosa's Marina Baixa Hospital and is expected to be taken to Benidorm police station for questioning once discharged.
