ARCHIVED - April 8 to 17, Semana Santa in Mazarron and Puerto de Mazarron
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The Puerto has its own schedule of processions apart from those in Mazarrón itself

Before the pandemic the scale of the Easter Week (Semana Santa) celebrations in Mazarrón was growing every year, and although they do not rival those of the cities of Lorca, Cartagena or Murcia, and are not as established as the events in nearby Totana or Alhama, they are well worth a visit to sample the flavour of the celebrations.
In Mazarrón processions are held on the morning of Palm Sunday, with the children carrying palm branches, and the evenings of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, all of them based at the Iglesia of San José.
In 2022, after three years without processions due to the Covid pandemic, the schedule for the main events is as follows (please note, programme may be modified due to adverse weather conditions or public health considerations):
April 8, Viernes de Dolores (Friday of Sorrows)
The image of the Virgen de la Amargura is on display throughout the day in the Church of la Purísima.
21.00: The annual Vía Crucis leaves from the church of San Antonio, featuring the brotherhoods of San Juan and Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno. The procession ends with Holy Mass and the kissing of the Virgen’s hands in the church of La Purísima.
April 10, Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday)
9.30: Holy Mass in La Azohía.
10.30: Holy Mass in Bolnuevo.
10.30; Children’s palm procession in the Jardín de la Paz.
10.45: Palm procession followed by Mass in Isla Plana.
11.15: Blessing of the palms at the Santuario de La Purísima followed by the main Procession of the Palms to the church of San Andrés, where Mass is held. Route: Convento, Calle del Pino, Alfonso X El Sabio and San Andrés, where Mass is held.
17.00: Homage is paid to the Monumento del Nazareno, followed by drumming from the various groups of the municipality in the Plaza del Romeral.
18.30 and 20.00: Holy Mass in the Iglesia de San Andrés.
April 11, Lunes Santo (Holy Monday)
21.00: Maritime Via Crucis in Puerto de Mazarrón, from the parish church through the town. A concert will be given on the seafront and another brief performance at the church.
(Note: this event may be postponed to Tuesday.)
April 12, Martes Santo (Holy Tuesday)
20.00: An exhibition entitled “Corazón nazareno” opens in the Santuario de La Purísima.
April 13, Miércoles Santo (Holy Wednesday)
22.00: Procesión de las Promesas, procession of promises, with one “paso” (sculpted tableau), the Cristo de las Promesas. Starts at the Santuario de la Purísima on the following route: Asilo de Ancianos La Purísima, Filomeno Hostench, Calle Covadonga, Avenida Constitución, Plaza del Callao, Plaza del Convento.
April 14, Jueves Santo (Maundy Thursday)
In Puerto de Mazarrón another Procession of the Palms takes place at around midday from the church of San Antón to the main parish church of San José, featuring children from the municipality carrying branches of palm trees or braided palm tree decorations.
