April to June Spring Paths: six free routes to discover the best landscapes in Alicante city

Alicante City Council has once again launched 'Senderos de Primavera' offering spectacular views of the city
As the weather heats up on the Costa Blanca, Alicante City Council has launched this year's 'Senderos de Primavera' (Spring Paths) programme with six free routes from April to June, providing a fantastic opportunity to take in the best landscapes and views the city has to offer.
Registration to take part in the free trails opened on Monday, with outdoor lovers given the chance to explore the bay of Alicante, the orchard towers and other areas of natural or environmental interest.
There will be a maximum of 50 people per guided route.
"All of the routes are included in the Network of Urban Trails of the City of Alicante, in order to make them known to the public and promote them as alternatives for leisure, environmental and 'healthy' tourism," said Alicante's Councillor for Urban Planning, Manuel Villar.
Here's a breakdown of the upcoming Spring Path trails:
Sunday March 26: Sierra de San Julián (the Serra Grossa) route. Located in front of the sea, at the northern access to Alicante city, the Sierra de San Julián or Serra Grossa occupies an area of more than 80 hectares, framed within a perimeter of 5km.
This geographical-environmental landmark is considered an "urban forest park" in which reforestation and landscape restoration work is being carried out to promote its use as a natural space.
The mountain range is also emblematic for its 'calcarenite', a building material used in ancient times and present in many monuments such as the Basilica of Santa Maria or the Monastery of Santa Faz.
From the top, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Bay and city of Alicante.
Sunday April 2: Mount Benacantil. Coinciding with the start of Easter Week and an anticipated influx of tourists, a tour of the Benacantil mountains has been scheduled on the slopes of Santa Barbara Castle, linking with the wall and La Ereta park.
Sunday April 23: 'Walks and unique trees in Alicante city'. Participants will learn about the history of the city through its arboreal heritage, such as the 100-year-old ficus trees in Gabriel Miró square, Portal de Elche and Canalejas.
Saturday May 6: Torres de la Huerta Trail. This tour will explore these 16th and 17th century towers and surroundings, making a circular route of about 8 km that delves into a portion of the city's history, passing by 11 of these constructions with the possibility of visiting one of them.
Saturday May 20: Cabo de la Huerta Path. This route starts at Albufereta beach and follows a 5km linear path through Almadraba beach, Cala Judíos and the micro-reserve of flora in Cala Cantalares which forms part of the Sites of Community Importance (SCI) of the Valencian Community proposed in the Natura 2000 Network (European Union).
It continues along Cala Palmera to the vicinity of the Cabo de la Huerta lighthouse, ending at San Juan beach.
Saturday June 3: Mount Orgegia route. This mountain covers a surface area of 77 hectares and is located in the centre of what was the 'orchard of Alicante'.
The disappearance of traditional agriculture, replaced by industrialised agriculture, together with urban growth, meant that the agricultural activity of yesteryear was progressively abandoned, turning this place into a mountain repopulated by the old ICONA (Institute for the Conservation of Nature 1971–1995) with some agricultural terraces in the valleys.
Anybody interested in pre-registering can do so by calling 965 960 034 (Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm) or by email: ceam.benacantil@alicante.es. Alternatively, register on the city council's website where there are further details.
