ARCHIVED - 1107 new cases of Covid in 24 hours; Wednesday 6th Murcia Region coronavirus
On Thursday the Covid Monitoring Committee will meet to impose new restrictions
Coronavirus in Murcia: More than 1,100 infections in a single day confirm the onset of a third wave in the Region
Although news that the number of coronavirus cases detected in less than 24 hours has shot past the 1,000 mark is not unexpected, it is no less welcome for the knowledge that it was an inevitability following a period in which socialising has been highly visual during the last two week period. Last night there was widespread anger in social networks about the size of some of the crowds which gathered in various parts of the country to witness the arrival of the Three Kings and throughout the holiday period there have been many images shared of gatherings exceeding the maximum of 6 (or 10 on specific feast days), in clear breach of the regulations and angering those who have made sacrifices to rigorously abide by the restrictions.
In just 24 hours the number of new cases detected has increased to 1, 107, a level of infections not even seen in the worst days of the pandemic in November following the All Saints and All Souls Bank Holiday weekend when the region registered record numbers of new contagions and the maximum record was set at 1,002.
The number of active cases has soared and today there are once again 5,729 active cases in the region, but more worryingly, the rate of hospital admissions has also increased, with 40 new admissions in the last 24 hours, taking the number of patients hospitalised back to 300 and the total in intensive care is now 70.
The accumulated incidence rate per 100,000 of population in the Region across the last 14 days has gone from 181 cases last Tuesday to 327.8 this Wednesday, highlighting how rapidly the fortunes of the region have changed.
Tomorrow the head of the regional Government, Fernando López Miras, will chair a special meeting of the Covid Monitoring Committee in the Palacio de San Esteban to decide on the next batch of restrictions which will be imposed across the region to try and stem the spread of the virus once again and there is widespread expectation that they will be strict and forceful. So if you need to shop and want to travel outside of your local municipality, Thursday is the day to stock up in the expectation that the restrictions imposed on nine municipalities already this week (which include perimeter confinement) are likely to be extended.
The 1,107 new cases detected in the last 24 hours are spread right aroud the region; 380 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 153 to Cartagena, 71 to Lorca, 37 to Molina de Segura, 37 to Yecla, 34 to Águilas, 27 to Jumilla, 25 to San Javier, 25 to Torre Pacheco, 23 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 23 to Cieza, 23 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 21 to Mula, 17 to La Unión, 18 to Los Alcázares, 16 to Alcantarilla, 15 to Santomera, 14 to Fortuna, 14 to Lorquí, 13 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 11 to Moratalla, 11 to Totana, 10 to Bullas, 10 to Cehegín, 8 to Alguazas, 8 to Alhama de Murcia, 8 to Fuente Álamo, 7 to Ceutí, 6 to Blanca, 5 to Abarán, 5 to Ricote , and 4 to Mazarrón. The remainder are distributed amongst the remaining municipalities in smaller numbers.
AI rate per 100,000 of population over the LAST 7 DAYS:
Worst affected is Abanilla with 963 per 100,000, followed by Fortuna with 830, Villanueva 721, Jumilla 543, Los alcázares 396, La Unión 395 and San Pedro del Pinatar 357 (note this data has not been updated from yesterday due to the Bank Holiday today).
Fatalities:Four fatalities have been reported in the last 24 hours; these are four men aged 54, 56, 61 and 49, from Totana, Los Alcázares, Torre Pacheco and Murcia, all four noticeably younger than the average throughout the crisis so far.
