ARCHIVED ARTICLE
6 further fatalities have been reported
Coronavirus in Murcia: For the third time in a week the Murcia Region has beaten its own record for the highest number of contagions diagnosed within a 24 hour period, as the region’s hospitals start to pay the price for the relaxation of measures enjoyed during the festive season.
1,444 infections have been diagnosed within the last 24 hours, comfortably beating the record of 1,279 set just 24 hours previously.
In the last 24 hours there have also been 47 new hospital admissions and 6 fatalities as a direct result of the virus have also been reported.
The latest data reported takes the total number of cases currently active up to 8,004.
Of the 1,444 new cases, 471 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 160 to Cartagena, 78 to Lorca, 71 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 66 to Yecla, 60 to Jumilla, 42 to Molina de Segura, 36 to La Unión, 34 to Torre Pacheco, 31 to Mula, 29 to Águilas, 29 to Alcantarilla, 26 to Cieza, 26 to Fortuna, 23 to San Javier, 21 to Moratalla, 21 to Santomera, 19 to Archena, 16 to Alguazas, 16 to Totana, 15 to Bullas , 13 to Blanca, 12 to Abanilla, 12 to Abarán, 12 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 10 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 9 to Fuente Álamo, 8 to Lorquí, 8 to Mazarrón, 7 to Cehegín, 6 to Los Alcázares, 6 to Beniel and 6 to Puerto Lumbreras, with the remainder distributed in quantities of less than 5 cases around the region.
The largest increase are logically focused in the major cities, although there is total coverage of the region and the number of cases are rising everywhere.
Hospitalisations: There have been 47 new hospital admissions during the last 24 hours, taking the total of hospitalisations to 370. The number of ICU intensive care patients has risen to 81, with 6 new admissions. This leaves 7,674 people in home isolation with milder symptoms.
Fatalities: There have also been 6 new deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hour period; three men and three women aged 93, 93, 91, 90, 88 and 59 years old from Murcia, Cartagena, San Javier, Jumilla and Mazarrón.
Today a total of 22 of the 45 municipalities in the Murcia Region are in confinement and given the rise in cases over the last week, it’s highly likely that this situation will be revised again on Monday when the regional Covid Monitoring Committee meets.
On Friday the vaccination programme began to vaccinate health professionals working in the hospitals and front line Covid care in the region. On Monday work will begin to vaccinate all of those working in the health and SUAP centres in the region. The process of vaccinating all health professionals and those in care homes and residences will not conclude until the middle of February, after which work will begin to vaccinate those aged over 80 living at home.
