300 direct and indirect jobs are promised for the opening of this new logistics centre
Regional TV has reported that the new Amazon logistical plant in the “Parque Logístico del Sureste”, alongside the Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera currently under construction is nearing completion, with "bulldozers working flat out" to complete the infrastructure as quickly as possible.
At the plant itself the company will be employing 30 or more people, but at the same time the opening of the distribution and logistics centre will imply the taking on of over 200 drivers. Amazon will be working in collaboration with five independent delivery companies in order to guarantee rapid delivery, operating from the new premises which will occupy a floor area of around 17,000 square metres.
In total 300 direct and indirect jobs will be created by the opening of the new plant.
Amazon’s logistics operation in Spain began with the opening of the centre in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) in 2012, since when four more main hubs have been created in El Prat, Martorelles and Castellbisbal (all in Barcelona) and Illescas (Toledo). Two more establishments in central areas of Madrid and Barcelona have also been opened, along with distribution centres in Getafe (Madrid) and Barberá del Vallés (Barcelona) and other logistical centres throughout the country including those in Paterna (province of Valencia), Málaga, Sevilla, Bilbao and Pontevedra.
Last year Amazon created 2,200 new jobs in Spain, bringing the number of people employed by the company in this country to 7,000.
E-Commerce has experienced a significant upward lift since the Covid pandemic began as consumers change their shopping habits and new customers adopt online shopping as part of daily life.
The prime beneficiaries of these revised shopping habits have been companies dedicated to online commerce, one of the key examples being Amazon.
Analysts from Bloomberg originally forecast 2nd quarter revenue of $81.2 billion for Amazon, but the company delivered $88.9 billion, a huge increase of 40% compared to Q2 2019 sales of $63.4 billion.
This is in spite of an additional $4 billion in costs for Covid protection measures and additional costs due to the Covid situation; in April the company forecast a $1.5 billion loss for Q2 but instead doubled profits from $2.6 billion in Q2 2019 to $5.2 billion in Q2 2020.
Hence the hurry to get this logistics centre open and operating!
