Medical experts in Murcia believe the Region has reached a pandemic plateau
As the country prepares to wave goodbye to masks on public transport as well as in opticians and hearing centres, the health crisis continues its steady improvement in the Region of Murcia. The mask is one of the last vestiges of the coronavirus pandemic and health experts all agree that the time has come to move forward.
"The incidence rates have stabilised, we are at a plateau, there is even a downward trend and therefore it is logical that we are making progress in recovering normality," explained Dr Enrique Bernal, head of the Infectious Diseases section and Covid coordinator at the Reina Sofía Hospital in Murcia.
Coronavirus infections
The Region of Murcia has registered a total of 156 new cases of coronavirus in the latest data published by the health authorities on Monday February 6, just one positive diagnosis more than on the same day last week.
This brings the overall number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 464,801.
Of the total cases, 91,669 have been diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative rate has registered another dramatic drop this week, falling to just 41.46 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospital pressure has taken another welcome dip with 28 patients currently admitted for Covid (a decrease of 7 since last Monday), 2 of whom are being treated for more serious symptoms in the Region’s ICU (one less).
Four additional Covid-related fatalities have been registered, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 2,520.
Covid testing
The Region of Murcia has carried out 3,273,315 PCR and antigen coronavirus detection tests.
Vaccination data
According to Spanish Ministry of Health data, 92.8% of the population of the Murcia Region over the age of 12 has had a least one dose. In addition, 93.2% of people are now double jabbed.
