Dance floors will be closed in the Region and the number of guests at tables limited
The Covid Monitoring Committee in the Region of Murcia has agreed on Thursday December 23 to close all non-essential activity between 1am and 6am over the Christmas period, with the aim of avoiding “late” gatherings in bars and restaurants.
Dance floors will also be closed off and in the hospitality sector, tables will be limited to a maximum of 10 people indoors and 12 outdoors. Large parties must adhere to these guidelines and members of the public will have to remain seated at parades.
According to the Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, drinks can only be consumed while patrons are seated, and drinking on public streets is strictly prohibited in order to avoid large concentrations of people.
According to the regional president Fernando López Miras, all of these restrictions will come into force on Christmas Eve and remain in place until January 14, although the measure will have to be endorsed by the Superior Court of Justice of the Region of Murcia.
The rules surrounding the requirement of a Covid passport to enter nightlife venues and its optional use in the rest of the hospitality industry remain unchanged.
Mr López Miras announced these measures shortly after taking part in a virtual meeting between President Sanchez and the other regional leaders, during which it was agreed to make mask-wearing outdoors mandatory once again without imposing any further national restrictions.
Murcia at high risk level
With Covid cases surging in recent days, the entire Region of Murcia has now been bumped up to alert level 3, which represents high risk. As a result, the health authorities have advised people to avoid social interactions where possible and to limit gatherings to no more than ten people.
Because of the elevated risk level, capacity in bars and restaurants where the Covid passport is requested will be reduced to 70% while at mass events a maximum of 50% is permitted.
The latest data show that the curve of the sixth wave is strikingly similar to January 2021 when the Christmas celebrations were already over.
Vaccinations
As a complementary measure, the Ministry of Health is going to implement, in collaboration with city councils, free mobile vaccination points and Covid test centres prior to Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
The objective is to ensure that people “have the opportunity both to be vaccinated and to know if they are a carrier before attending a gathering.” However, Mr Pedreño has asked that anyone with symptoms avoid these points and instead contact their local health centre.
