The aim is to enhance pedestrian mobility in the Foites area and Els Tolls neighbourhood in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province
A 2.6-million-euro project to improve accessibility and pedestrian mobility in the Foites area and Els Tolls neighbourhood in Benidorm has got underway this week, the first major phase of the town's Sustainable and Integrated Development Strategy (EDUSI).
Councillor for Mobility, José Ramón González de Zárate, explained that the work in Els Tolls will start in Calle Portugal and progress to calles Inglaterra, Austria and Avenida Andalucía.
"The drinking water pipes, the sewage system, the street lighting and the whole urban scene will be changed, in addition to accessibility improvements. The works will also include the widening of certain pavements that currently do not meet the requirements for complete accessibility."
Road safety measures will also be implemented at crossings near the school and public amenities at a total cost of 2.08 million euros.
Meanwhile, more than half a million euros is being invested in the Foietes upper area, including Plaza del Prelado Antonio Bayona, and calles Estació, Capitán Cortés, Rejoneador Ginés Cartagena,
"This is an area with a high volume of residents and pedestrian traffic due to the proximity of three schools and the Ciudad Deportiva 'Guillermo Amor', and to date, no major renovation work had been carried out on the urban scene," explained Zárate.
Here, pavements will be increased in size by between 50 centimetres and a metre, depending on the section, reducing the width of the carriageway in the three streets and bringing the pedestrian areas into line with accessibility regulations.
The paving and lighting will also be renewed, and all water and telecommunications services will be channelled.
The most significant changes will be carried out in Plaza del Prelado Antonio Bayona, which "will be completely renovated following the model of Calle Polop, making it fully accessible access to nearby housing whilst creating more pedestrian space and green and shaded areas".
Benidorm's Sustainable and Integrated Development Strategy has obtained a European grant of 10 million euros to fund 23 projects focused on "enhancing the quality of life for residents" by reducing CO2 emissions, protecting the environment, combating inequality through inclusion policies and improving access to information technology.
These projects include the building of a youth hostel, camping area and interpretation centre in Séquia Mare Park, and the refurbishment of the bullring, both of which are also currently underway.
