ARCHIVED - Cadiz council brings facemasks back and requests curfew to reduce the spread of Covid
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The seaside town in Cádiz, which is highly popular with tourists, currently has the highest coronavirus incidence rate of all of the Bay of Cádiz in southern Andalusia.
The mayor of Conil de la Frontera, a popular tourist destination in Cádiz, has issued a municipal decree to make facemasks compulsory in the town’s historical centre as maintaining 1.5 metres of separation from others on the busy streets is impossible at certain times of the day.
The council of the seaside town has also asked the regional and national governments for permission to bring in a curfew from the time the bars shut until 6 am to avoid citizens from gathering elsewhere after closing time.
Moreover, non-regulated sports activities have been suspended, and extra safety measures have been brought in for other activities such as the summer market, where citizens are reminded that they must wear their masks, especially in enclosed areas.
The council of the town, which on Monday had the highest incidence rate in all the Bay of Cádiz (1,440 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), has also called for neighbouring towns to enforce the use of masks.
The number of Covid cases in the region has soared in the last two weeks, and the municipality has one of the highest rates in all of Spain.
It is vital to continue using facemasks despite the current legal void, the mayor has said, and the council must take robust measures to remind citizens of the dangers that still exist and that they need to be very careful.
However, although infection rates are increasing, the hospitals are coping well and are not yet in danger of becoming overwhelmed, he reported. He did, however, call for extra backup staff and trackers to be sent to reinforce Conil’s health centre.
Finally, the mayor stressed that although youngsters are part of the current problem, they should not become scapegoats as the high transmission rate of the Delta variant is also partly to blame for the sharp increase in cases. Image: Protección Civil de Conil de la Frontera
