Coronavirus cases show no sign of slowing down in the Region of Murcia
As families and friends gather over the holiday season, Covid cases in the Region of Murcia are increasing rapidly, with just under 2,000 cases reported on Christmas Day and data showing a 67% increase from December 20 to December 26.
The situation has worsened drastically in the past week, with the 14-day incidence rate shooting up to 1,226 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the latest update.
New cases
Monday’s update (December 27) reported 667 new cases diagnosed on Sunday, of which 161 were in the municipality of Murcia, 124 were in Cartagena, 44 were in Alcantarilla, 41 were in Lorca, 29 were in Molina de Segura, 24 were in Torre Pacheco, 22 were in Las Torres de Cotillas, 22 were in Totana and the rest were distributed amongst the remaining municipalities.
Active cases
The number of active cases has soared over the past few days and there are now well over 10,000 cases in the Region of Murcia: 13,501 to be exact.
Hospitalisations
The effects of the sixth wave are also being felt in the Region’s hospitals, with 287 Covid patients in total, of whom 75 are in intensive care. The patients in ICUs are aged between 22 and 72 and 50% aren’t vaccinated. The pressure is also affecting the Region’s health centres, with patients struggling to get doctors' appointments before mid-January.
Fatalities
Since the previous update on December 23, five people have lost their lives to Covid; the most recent of which was an 87-year-old man from Health Area II (Cartagena). With these latest fatalities, the total death toll in Murcia now stands at 1,806.
Incidence rates
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in Murcia is now 1,226.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is a 200-point jump from the end of last week when the figure was 1,008.6 (December 24). Meanwhile, the 7-day rate is also rapidly increasing and now stands at 712.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 617.6 on Friday.
Vaccines
Despite just over 84% of the population having had two Covid jabs, the Health authorities in the Region are appealing to the 85,000 remaining residents who have yet to have a single dose of the vaccine. In addition, 95.45% of the population has had at least one dose.
As for the booster jabs, over 60s in the Region can now have their third dose with no need of a prior appointment.
