ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Infections decrease sharply but a further ten fatalities have been registered in the Region
The withdrawal of the sixth wave of the pandemic is becoming more and more pronounced as the weeks go by in the Region of Murcia, which has reached another huge milestone on Monday February 7. According to the Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, over the last seven days, the number of new cases has experienced the steepest decrease since transmission began to slow in mid-January.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence has taken a huge nosedive, falling to 2,974 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on February 6 compared to 3,300 before the weekend. This is still above the national average but the fact that the seven-day figure has also decreased considerably to 1,050 cases is a strong indication that the situation is likely to continue improving.
Coronavirus infections
The regional health authorities have registered a further 468 Covid infections, considerably fewer than the 1,695 infections reported on Friday. The number of active infections has fallen from 23,890 to 18,557.
Of the 468 cases, 116 were registered in Cartagena, 112 in Murcia, 46 in Lorca and 23 in Molina de Segura. The rest are distributed throughout the other municipalities.
Since the health crisis began, 339,250 people in Murcia have contracted coronavirus, while 318,645 people have overcome the disease.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Crucially, hospital pressure is continuing to abate and has actually fallen by 20% compared to last Monday. There are currently 537 patients aged between 15 and 96 being treated in Murcian hospitals, down from 572 on Friday, while 76 people with more serious conditions are in the ICU, down from 80. Two out of three of the most gravely ill are unvaccinated.
Some 18,020 people are in self-isolation at home with Covid.
Unfortunately, the daily death toll remains comparatively high, and a further ten fatalities have been reported in the last 24 hours: six men and four women aged between 66 and 93 years old. This brings the total deaths in the Region since the start of the pandemic to 2,030.
The last week has been the deadliest of the sixth wave, with 59 fatalities.
Vaccination data
As of February 6, a total of 1,200,313 people over the age of 12, representing 91.4% of the population of the Region of Murcia, have been double jabbed while 1,231,855 people have received the first dose.
