Since the last update, only 4,855 new coronavirus infections have been registered in Spain

The transmission of coronavirus in Spain has returned to levels not seen since before the explosion of the Omicron variant in December, with the 14-day cumulative incidence rate receding to just 195.17 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Friday August 19.

This figure brings Spain down to medium risk.

Coronavirus infections

The latest data from the Ministry of Health shows that since the last health report on Tuesday, 4,885 new coronavirus infections have been reported in people over the age of 60, compared to more than 30,000 cases during the peak of this seventh wave.

In the general population, infections have been reduced to just over 8,400 since Tuesday, compared to more than 60,000 a couple of months ago.

Cumulative incidence rate

The 14-day rate in the older population has dropped by more than 1,000 points in the last month. Back in December, when the incidence was recorded for the entire population, this figure exceeded 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

This past week, the 7-day figure has also decreased to 74 cases per 100,000, which indicates that the level of transmission will continue to fall.

Hospitalisations and fatalities

At the end of last year, hospital occupancy was at 3.8%, the very same as it is now; however, intensive care was under serious pressure, with 8% of all ICU beds occupied by Covid patients. Today, that figure has fallen to just 3.6%.

Since last Tuesday, there are 596 fewer Covid patients in hospitals and in one month occupancy has plummeted by more than 50%, falling from approximately 11,500 to the current 4,542.

ICUs are now out of risk alert once more with 308 patients being treated for more serious conditions.

The regions with the most patients in the ICU, and therefore with a higher occupancy indicator, are: La Rioja (7.5%), the Basque Country (7.1%), the Community of Madrid (6%), Catalonia (6%) and Cantabria (6%).

According to Health data, the average rate of ICU admissions each week has plummeted to 0.45 people per 100,000 inhabitants. This is a lower figure than before the start of the Omicron wave in December.

In the last month, 2,486 deaths related to Covid have been recorded, an average of about 80 each day, bringing the overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 112,128.

Vaccination data

As of August 22, a total of 39,141,036 people representing 92.8% of the population over the age of 12, have been double jabbed. In addition, 39,256,032 people, or 93.1%, have received at least once vaccination.
