While Covid-19 beats a retreat in Andalusia, the approach of the colder weather means we should be worried about the return of influenza

The cumulative incidence rate of Covid-19 in Andalusia – insofar as it concerns people in the over-60s age group, who are the only ones monitored in Spain now – continues to drop a steady rate of around 1.38 cases per 100,000 inhabitants every half week. This shows that the seventh wave of coronavirus in the autonomous community is slowly continuing its retreat, but scientists in Spain are now warning that the new threat for this autumn/winter season is none other than the common flu.

Over the last two years, prevention measures like face masks and social distancing have reduced the impact of the flu virus in Spain. But now, with most of the Covid restrictions abolished, health experts are warning that we should be “preparing for the worst” with a rebound in the number and seriousness of the flu, and are recommending that people – especially the elderly and at-risk groups – get vaccinated.

To book an appointment for a flu vaccine in Spain, go to your nearest health centre and present your health card. If you cannot speak Spanish, you may want to take with you somebody who can so they can help you make your appointment.

New infections

On Tuesday September 20, Andalusia has registered a total of 839 new cases of coronavirus since last Friday, bringing the total number of infections in Andalusia since the start of the pandemic to 1,601,886.

This latest figure of new infections is around 100 fewer new cases than in the last update on Friday.

Hospitalisations

Andalusia has also recorded four fewer hospital admissions since Friday, bringing the total to 174. Admissions to intensive care units also fell by three to six.

By provinces, Malaga recorded 39 hospitalised patients with one in ICU, followed by Seville with 25 and two in ICU; Jaen, with 22 hospitalised, none in ICU; Cadiz, with 21 and two in ICU; Granada with 20 and none in ICU; Almeria, with 18 and none in ICU; Córdoba, with 15 and two in ICU; and Huelva, with 14 and none in ICU.

Cumulative incidence rate

With regard to the current average incidence of infection in Andalusia in the last 14 days in people over 60 years of age, this Tuesday it fell again and stands at 83.55 points per 100,000 inhabitants, 1.38 points less than four days ago – the exact same amount that it had reduced by at the last count, which shows that the Covid situation (at least among older people) is on a firmly downward slope.

Deaths

The number of deaths from Covid-19 in Andalusia has risen by 24 to 15,183 – only a very slight increase of 3 more deaths than at the last count when there were 21 fatalities registered.
