Benidorm Town Hall is offering a one-off payment towards spiking energy costs

Families across Spain continue to be hit with mounting household costs and as energy prices remain on an upward trajectory, Benidorm Town Hall has launched a round of one-off payments to help the over 65s registered in Benidorm pay their electricity bills.

The aid, co-financed by the local authority and Alicante Provincial Council, can be applied for in person or online until August 26. A total of 300,000 euros has been allocated to help alleviate the cost of energy consumption, and eligible applicants will receive at least 50 euros each.

"This new aid aims to prevent energy poverty," explained Benidorm Mayor, Toni Pérez, adding: "At a time when the cost of the average shopping basket continues to rise, and month after month energy prices escalate, there is great economic uncertainty and it is vital we support our senior citizens who have been the mainstay in many moments of crisis."

If, once all applications have been met, not all of the 300,000 euros budgeted has been awarded, the remainder will be distributed amongst all the beneficiaries and the initial aid of 50 euros will be increased to a maximum of 100 euros.

Applicants must be over 65-years-old and have been registered in Benidorm for at least the last five years without interruption. They must be the owner or tenant of a property intended for habitual residence. Any other members of the family unit must also be 65 or over and registered in the town.

Requests can be made at: https://sede.benidorm.org/catalogo-de-servicios/BSENER/-, from Saturday August 6, or in person at the Town Hall General Registry, at José Llorca Linares, La Torreta, Jelena and Tanit social centres, or at the Department of Social Welfare from Monday August 8.

Additionally, it can be submitted by registered post, providing the required documentation and the application form, available at the Town Hall's E-Office and at the social centres.

Homeowners must provide a paid IBI bill for 2021, the DNI's of all household members, three electricity bills paid in 2022, the direct debit document signed by the bank and a photocopy of the bank book or equivalent document.

Tenants, on the other hand, must provide the rental contract - which must be for at least 12 months - DNI of all household members, three electricity bills paid in 2022. If the electricity is in the name of the homeowner, proof of payment must be provided.
