ARCHIVED - Fewer coronavirus patients in Murcia hospitals as lockdown begins to de-escalate tentatively
One more fatality brings the death toll in Murcia up to 125 but 25 more patients have completed recoveries
The latest daily update regarding the pandemic in Murcia, which was made public on Thursday evening, reports just one more death in the Region, bringing the total up to 125. However, other data continue to show a marked improvement: 25 more people have made full recoveries, and there are now almost as many people in this group (791) as there are active cases of Covid-19 (825).
Furthermore, the strain on the resources of the health service continues to ease gradually, with the number of coronavirus patients in hospital falling to 105, 22 of them in intensive care units, and Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in the regional government, continues to express cautious optimism over the improving situation.
Sr Villegas welcomes the decision by the national government to allow children out of their homes this week to runabout and play in the open air for the first time in six weeks, and reiterates that all of the indications are that the continuing de-escalation of the confinement is likely to be “asymmetrical”. In other words, those living in some parts of Spain will probably be allowed a greater degree of freedom earlier than those in others, and it appears that Murcia could be one of the Regions where steps towards the “new normality” will be made earlier rather than later.
However, speaking to the press on Thursday evening, he wisely refused to be drawn into revealing the matters to be discussed during Friday’s video-conference among all 17 regional health authorities and the national government, explaining that he would not wish to raise false hopes prior to decisions being made. On the matter of allowing children outside, he said, those involved have been behaving “a little crazily”, making and reversing decisions in great haste, and while the minister believes that Murcia has sufficient capacity to isolate any new cases confirmed he also reminds the public that public places must be considered places of risk in spreading contagion.
In this context, he says that it is still early to speculate on whether it may be possible for people to go to the beaches of the Costa Cálida this summer.
Murcia sample size increased in national prevalence testing scheme
Meanwhile, it has been announced that the nationwide coronavirus testing scheme being embarked upon by the Ministry of Health is to be carried out on a larger sample of the population in the Region of Murcia than had originally been planned. The first outline of the study, which will be used to determine what proportion of the population has already been infected with Covid-19, will now involve around 2,700 Murcianos, each of them giving blood samples in their local health centres for analysis.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
