ARCHIVED - Fined for walking his chicken in Lanzarote in breach of lockdown regulations
ARCHIVED ARTICLE Police failed to see the funny side of 740 deaths yesterday and issued a fine
Some people are so desperate to get out of the house that several cases of irate shopkeepers have been reported after members of the public visited their shop several times in a day under the pretence of buying something simply to get outside and away from the lockdown, increasing the risk for the shopkeeper of contracting the virus!.
Although this particular individual may have thought that what he was doing was highly amusing, the Guardia Civil suffred an acute sense of humour failure and have issued a fine for failing to observe the State of Emergency lockdown order, reminding this resident of Lanzarote that lockdown means lockdown and only dogs may be walked on a lead; chickens do not qualify as dogs and do not need a walk.
Thousands of people across Spain have been fined and some even arrested for failing to observe the lockdown.
The latest official figures produced by the Spanish government show that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout the country has risen to 47,610 from 39,673 with the number of related fatalities having reached 3,434 (after an increase of 740 in 24 hours) and another 3,166 patients in intensive care (530 more than on Tuesday). 5,367 patients have been given the all clear, but in a week when it is hoped that a peak may be reached in the number of new cases being reported the latest data continue to be less encouraging than some had anticipated.
The numbers of cases has risen by almost 44 per cent since the official bulletin on Monday lunchtime and the crisis is overwhelming the health services in some areas of Spain. The situation is critical in Madrid, where intensive care units are now operating at double their maximum capacity and field hospitals have been brought into use to cope with the continued growth in the number of serious cases.
Since the last official update yesterday 290 people have died in Madrid alone, pushing the number of deaths in the region up 1,825 and accounting for 53 per cent of Covid-19 deaths in Spain. There are now 14,597 reported cases in Madrid (and 1,150 patients in intensive care) but the reality is that there could be many thousands more, as the system is so overwhelmed that tests are no longer being analysed immediately.
