ARCHIVED - Friday morning update: over 18,000 official cases in Spain with 215 in Murcia
A rise of 1,000 cases overnight as the death toll rises to 832 in Spain
The latest official figures produced by the Spanish government show that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout the country has risen to 18,074 with nearly 7,000 of the cases in the region of Madrid.
At the same time, the latest data presented Thursday evening includes an increase in the number of fatalities related to the virus to 832.
1,107 have recovered fully from the virus, the same total as at mid-day.
These figures do NOT reflect the true situation. Some areas are so overwhelmed by the volume of cases that they have stopped testing, others have run out of testing equipment and others have changed to a system of classifying suspected cases after talking to those calling helplines rather than testing in person. This has lead to ridiculous headlines in some digital media desperate to get as many clicks as possible onto their pages claiming that the number of cases in a specific area has not increased; come on guys, use your common sense, what a ridiculous headline to put out giving false hope that the virus is somehow on the run!
An example of the inaccuracy of the figures is that there are known to be over 22,000 cases in Madrid, but these official figures show under 7,000, which is wildly inaccurate.
It is hoped that the strict confinement of members of the public to their homes throughout Spain will slow the spread of the virus, but it is not known when the effects will become clear; according to Fernando Simón, who presented the latest data. On Wednesday it was stated that the virus is expected to peak around 3 weeks after the start of the containment measures and nobody is under any illusions that this is not going to be a short-term lockdown.
It must be stressed that at the moment there have been no official announcements regarding the extension of the lockdown period, although this morning there are many posts on social media claiming that it has, coming from erroneous information published on a road traffic blog used by some in the expat community. Of course, this will change at some point, but as of today this is not official information.
Figures for the Region of Murcia:
Number of peoiple affected: 215
Number in isolation at home: 177
Total number in hospital: 38
Number in intensive care: 7
Number recovered: 1
More than 2,000 negative tests.
We're one week into lockdown today here in the Region of Murcia, and the authorities are emphasising the need for patience during the confinement period which has been established during the emergency, recognizing that frustration is beginning to mount and that tempers will be fraying. It is important to remember that staying at home is essential in order to make the period of confinement as short as possible for everyone and reduce the number of deaths by limiting the spread of the virus.
Read; Spain is about one week behind Italy in its Coronavirus progression.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
