ARCHIVED - Hospital admission fall to pre-sixth wave levels: Murcia Covid update March 28
The cumulative incidence rate in the Murcia Region has, however, increased by 11% in just one week
The Covid pandemic enters a new phase in Spain on Monday March 28, with the elimination of quarantine for those who are mildly infected or asymptomatic. With health authorities only stringently monitoring severe cases and vulnerable populations, the daily data from now on will be less demonstrative, but all the latest indicators show that the pandemic in the Region of Murcia is well and truly under control.
According to the last report published regarding numbers on Sunday March 27, the incidence rate fell again last week and hospital admissions are at the same levels as November, before the sixth wave struck.
Coronavirus infections
Regional health authorities registered 93 new cases on Sunday, which is a huge decrease on the 450 infections reported in the last report of March 24. However, it’s important to note that as fewer tests are generally carried out at the weekend, the infection figures following can appear deceptively low.
Of the total cases, 18 correspond to the municipality of Cartagena, 17 to Murcia, 5 to Lorca, 5 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 5 to Cieza, 5 to Mazarrón. The remaining infections are distributed across the other municipalities.
The number of active cases also fell to 3,300, almost 500 fewer than on Friday, as did the number of people self-isolating at home (down to 3,216).
This data brings the total number of infections in the Region of Murcia since the beginning of the pandemic to 390,107, while 384,607 patients have fully recovered from the virus.
Cumulative incidence rate
Overall, the steady fall of infections in Region stagnated about ten days ago, and this fact is reflected in the cumulative incidence rate. In fact, the incidence data has increased by 11% in the last week, both at 14 and at seven days.
As of March 27, the incidence rate stands at 479.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (up from 433 on the same day last week) while the 7-day figure is now 232 (compared to 209 on March 21).
However, this is now just slightly higher than the Spanish national average of 461, which has also risen in recent days.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
The downward trend in hospitalisations continues: there are currently 84 patients admitted to the Region’s hospitals with Covid, which is 12 fewer than on Friday. Of these, 14 are being treated in the ICU.
One more Covid-related fatality was reported on Sunday, that of an 87-year-old man from the VIII health area (Mar Menor).
Over the entire weekend, four people with coronavirus have lost their lives in the region, bringing the overall death toll since the health crisis began in Murcia to 2,200.
Vaccination data
Since the last update, 91.68% of the entire population of the Murcia Region has had a least one dose. In addition, 83.80% of people are now double jabbed.
Data at a glance from Sunday March 27:
Positives diagnosed in the last 24-hour period: 93
Active cases: 3,300
Total of positive cases to date: 390,107
Patients in home isolation with mild cases: 3,216
Hospitalisations: 84
