ARCHIVED - Hospital pressure begins to ease in earnest: Andalusia Covid update January 27
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The number of people in hospital with Covid is dropping quickly. Is this the end of the sixth wave?
14-day incidence rate in Andalucía since March 2020
Finally, hospital admissions and the number of patients in the ICU are beginning to drop substantially in Andalucía, which was the benchmark by which the regional government has said they will measure their response to the pandemic from now on instead of according to the cumulative incidence rate.
The death rate is still high, with a further 156 people having lost their lives this week so far, but with any luck this number too should start to come down too, just like the infection rates and cumulative incidence rate before it.
New infections
Andalucía has registered 8,353 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours after 8,444 on Thursday, 6,370 on Wednesday, 8,937 on Monday (48 hours), 12,928 on Saturday, 7,625 on Friday and 17,548 last Thursday.
Cumulative incidence rate
According to data provided by the Andalusian Minister of Health, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate now stands at 1,168 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 77 less than yesterday and 196 fewer than this time last week.
The Minister has pointed out that the region is “on a clear downward trend” and is at “less than half” the rate in Spain, although he acknowledged that this is a parameter that is becoming less useful every day when compared to the number of hospitalisations.
Hospitalisations
With regard to hospital inpatients, the Minister explained that today there are 2,284 people on the ward, 37 fewer than yesterday, while in the ICU there are 221 covid patients, 20 fewer than yesterday.
“The important thing, and what sets our objectives is [hospital] occupancy. And in ICU we are ten points below the Spanish average, which gives us a cushion to have the capacity to accommodate patients in the event that we have a problem”, he said.
Deaths
Although infection rates and even hospitalisations are falling, there were still 28 fatalities in the last 24 hours. This is 36 less than yesterday, when Andalucía saw a record number of deaths in this sixth wave, but it is still worryingly high.
During the pandemic, more than 12,000 people in Andalucía have lost their lives due to Covid.
“Mortality is the hardest thing. We have lost a year of life expectancy in both men and women”, said the Minister.
Vaccinations
In Andalucía, 5,000 people have had their first vaccine in the last day, and 10,000 more have now had their full dose since yesterday. This means that in total 83.2% of people over 5 years of age – 7,039,959 people – have been fully vaccinated and 88.6% – 7,502,845 people – have had their first shot.
