ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The incidence rate has dropped for nine consecutive days in Spain
Just two days after Congress voted to extend the mandatory use of facemasks outdoors, the Ministry of Health in Spain has announced that, given the positive evolution of the pandemic, the government will approve a decree early next week to abolish the measure.
All across Spain, the restrictions to deal with the coronavirus pandemic have begun to give way to normality, and in the Basque country, Aragón and the Canary Islands the Covid passport will be eliminated from this weekend, while in Catalonia nightlife venues are set to reopen in the coming days.
Span’s Health Minister assured on Thursday that “we are on the right track” and with the Covid indicators dropping across all the autonomous communities, the time is fast approaching to “relax measures”.
Cumulative incidence rate
Thursday February 3 marked the ninth consecutive day for a decline in the 14-day incidence rate. In the last 24 hours it has dropped a further 143 points to stand at 2,420 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and every region has experienced a decline.
Catalonia remains well out in front, with 4,046 cases, although it too has reported a significant drop from 4,397 yesterday. It is followed by the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community while Andalucía is rapidly moving towards normality with just 831 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
In addition, the 7-day rate is now just 872 cases, a very positive indication that the incidence will continue to decline in the coming days.
The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged 11 and under, at 4,569 cases, although the figure has fallen across all age ranges in the last day.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health reported an additional 74,368 infections on February 3, compared to 86,222 the previous day.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 10,199,716.
Fatalities
A further 183 Covid-related deaths were reported on Thursday, a much lower than the figure of 224 registered the day before.
In the last seven days, 809 fatalities have been reported, bringing the overall death toll since the health crisis began to 94,040.
Crucially, hospital pressure has consistently eased this week. There are currently 17,012 patients hospitalised for Covid throughout Spain (down from 17,441 yesterday) and 1,947 being treated for more serious conditions in the ICU (down from 2,010).
This means that 13.59% of all hospital beds are taken up by coronavirus patients (13.96% on Wednesday) while the ICU occupancy rate has also decreased, from 21.34% to 20.63%.
In the last 24 hours, 1,722 people have been admitted to hospital while 2,195 have recovered and been released.
Vaccination data
As of February 3, a total of 38,312,156 people, representing 90.8% of the population over the age of 12, have been double jabbed while 39,119,923 people (92.7%) have received their first Covid vaccine dose.
