While there haven’t been any groundbreaking changes to the health data in the last week, the coronavirus pandemic is slowly but surely loosening its grip, with improvements seen in every area in Friday August 26’s report. The incidence rate has dropped another 15 points but crucially, hospital pressure has eased substantially, with fewer than 3% of intensive care beds now occupied with Covid patients.

Nonetheless, the Spanish government is maintaining its line that facemasks will still be obligatory in pharmacies, health centres and on public transport, and they have no plans to change this any time soon.

Coronavirus infections

The Ministry of Health registered 9,192 new cases of coronavirus on Friday August 26, of which 5,396 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60, similar numbers to those seen in the previous report. This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,332,976.

Cumulative incidence rate

The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has fallen almost 15 points since the last report to stand at 161.99 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 176.152 cases registered on Tuesday.

In the past two weeks, 19,954 people in this age group have tested positive for coronavirus.

Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 244.69 cases, followed by septuagenarians (164.38), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (106.59). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.

In the past two weeks, a total of 21,744 positives have been registered in this age group.

Aragón continues to have the lowest incidence rate in Spain this week, with just 82.40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Andalucia (99.25) and Catalonia (114.60).

Every region has now dropped well below the 400-case threshold, with the exception of the north African enclave of Melilla.

Hospitalisations and fatalities

There are currently 3,510 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain (553 fewer than last Tuesday) while 241 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (compared to 271 earlier in the week).

These figures mean that 3.06% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid-positive patients while intensive care occupancy has fallen from 3.25% to 2.91%.

A further 208 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Tuesday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 112,454 people.

Vaccination data

As of August 29, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,142,950 people have now received two doses.

So far, 39,257,229 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
