La Rambla Shopping Centre has been central to Cartagena's jab campaign, but will now undergo a full facelift inside and out
Cartagena's mass vaccination point, La Rambla Shopping Centre administered its last jab on Thursday March 31 before closing its doors ahead of a major facelift inside and out.
The centre played a major part in fully vaccinating 83% of the population, and 100% of the "elderly and most vulnerable", but will now make way for local health clinics which will take over the administration of jabs.
Cartagena Mayor, Noelia Arroya, confirmed on Thursday that "from now on all vaccinations will be concentrated in health centres".
Since the Covid vaccination campaign began in December 2020, a total of 197,191 people, 87.72% of the population in Cartagena have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and more than 188,000 are now fully immunised (83.68%).
In terms of age, the highest percentage of vaccination is amongst the over 80s, with a vaccination rate of 100%. In the case of children between five and 11, vaccination of second doses is still being carried out, but 8,095 children have already received their first jab, which represents 40.5% of the minor population.
"This long vaccination campaign has been a collective success and we must thank health professionals for their efforts, as well as the dozens of volunteers who, during these difficult months, have given their time. They have assisted health staff and made the vaccination process much more bearable," said Arroyo.
La Rambla opened its doors in May to "triple the vaccination capacity in the municipality", and up to 10,000 vaccines per day were administered during the phases of higher incidence.
In October 2021, La Rambla was closed when daily cases began to fall, prior to the sixth wave of the pandemic, and reopened just before Christmas to "boost vaccination and the performance of antigen and PCR tests in preparation for the Christmas holidays".
Now the shopping centre is being given a new lease of life, after years of no commercial activity, and is to undergo an extensive makeover. Negotiations are already underway for DIY, food and fashion stores to set up shop in La Rambla, as well as a gym and cinema.
