Mazarron beaches get lifeguards to protect swimmers this summer
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The 2023 summer lifeguard service has started on thirteen beaches in Mazarrón
The first aid points and the lifeguarding posts of the beaches along the
Mazarrón coastline have been opened this weekend. On Saturday July 1, the Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, decreed the official opening of the vital lifeguard service, while saying he hoped that “they will have to intervene as little as possible” since “that will mean that it has been a quiet, pleasant summer for all tourists”.
There will be lifeguards and first aid available on the Playa del Mojón, Playa del Alamillo, Playa de la Isla, Nares, Moreras, Playa Percheles, Puerto and La Pava beaches until August 31, while this service will be extended until September 15 for the Playa del Rihuete, Bahía, La Reya, Castellar and Bolnuevo Oasis beaches.
These are the dates and times that the first aid stations will be open on Mazarrón beaches:
- El Mojón, Alamillo, La Isla, Nares, Moreras and Percheles: 11.30am to 7.30pm every day of the week until August 31
- Playa del Rihuete, Puerto, Bahia, La Reya, La Pava, Castellar, Bolnuevo Camping, Bolnuevo Centre and Bolnuevo Oasis: 10.30 to 8.30pm every day of the week until August 31
- Playa del Rihuete, Bahía, La Reya, Castellar and Bolnuevo-Oasis: 11.30am to 7.30pm every day of the week until September 15
All the stations are equipped with rescue kayaks, immobilisation, CPR equipment and semi-automatic defibrillators. The rescue boats are located at the Rihuete, Bahía, Castellar, Bolnuevo (Oasis) and Percheles lifeguarding stations, and all of them have geolocation communications through the TETRACARM system.
The places with accessible bathing points for those with reduced mobility are El Puerto, La Isla and La Pava.
There was a slight delay in getting lifeguards on the beaches this year, something Mayor Campillo put down to “appeals lodged by two companies that have opted to keep the [outsourced lifeguarding] contract, which has delayed everything and the obligation to draw up an emergency contract so that the lifeguard stations are open today.”
In the end, the successful company running the lifeguard service this year is the EULEN group, the same one that provided the service last year. Mazarrón Councillor for Civil Protection, Carmen Navarro, thanked the company for its work in putting “in place in a matter of a few days all the necessary means to have both personal and material means to cover all the prevention of what may happen on our coast”.
Carlos Riquelme, the area manager for the EULEN group in the Region of Murcia, said, “For us it is a real pleasure to provide this service, we have the experience to ensure that all the beaches have the necessary surveillance and that the safety of bathers is not compromised at any time.”
