ARCHIVED - Monday Covid news round-up for the Region of Murcia
Lorca and Jumilla remain in confinement, quarantines in schools continue to grow, figures for covid fall as PCR test numbers lower on Sunday
Click here for the latest figures; 234 new covid cases in Murcia due to low number of PCR tests on Sunday
Click here for Spanish figures: Coronavirus cases rise by more than 30,000 across Spain this weekend
Lorca and Jumilla will remain in confinement for a further week.
Six Cartagena police in quarantine after attending call-out linked to domestic violence. The incident began when police were trying to locate a woman who had been reported for allegedly breaching a confinement order. At the same time they were actively seeking an aggressor following another call-out relating to a domestic violence assault; both cases turned out to be linked, and involved the same woman. Six officers now have to be quarantined after maintaining close contact during the detention of both parties.
Outbreak in residence for the disabled in Jumilla
The Murcian Health Service (SMS) has been forced to intervene in the residence for the disabled in Jumilla, where 25 covid infections have been detected, with 15 residents and 10 workers of the Masvida center positive. None are seriously ill, although the center has had to be disinfected. The SMS, which has collaborated in the disinifection, is also conducting a clinical follow-up of the rest of the residents of Masvida, to control the outbreak.
More than 1,500 PCR tests to care centre workers
Since an order published on August 18th, which establishes that PCR tests on all residence workers returning to work after holidays must be tested, 1,892 tests have been requested by care centres in the Murcia Region, of which 1,532 results have been obtained. These tests have detected 37 positive cases in a total of 27 centers, preventing these cases from contaminating care home residents.
Murcia City: Policia local in Murcia issued 394 fines over the weekend for failing to wear a mask in a public place.
34 sanctioned in Murcia city on Saturday night when police inspected a bar. Nobody inside the premises was wearing a mask, many were smoking, there was no social distancing, the bar had no licence, alcohol was being served to minors and measures not being implemented, so both clients and the bar owner will be fined.
Archena police issued 40 sanctions at the weekend to those failing to observe covid measures.
Complaints from residents about police inaction in the district of barrio del Espíritu Santo in Murcia city on Saturday night when 300 people attended an engagement party in the street of calle Sevilla. The town hall claims in a note that local police dissolved the gathering after the Policia Nacional refused to intervene. The national police deny this, saying their patrols were busy elsewhere and the competence for a local event is the local police, run by the town hall. People actually living near to the street who complained about the loud music, rubbish left in the street and lack of masks at the event, said police had talked to the residents, but they were left to carry on, as the police didn't want a big disturbance when they had so little resource in an area known for this type of event and the event was very low-key. It's the type of situation which occurs regularly, the nocturnal gatherings of local communities the type of occasion on which the virus thrives, and local police unwilling to cause bad feeling within the local community by issuing lots of fines.
Lorca purchasing 200 antigen tests: these will be used to test council employees, local police, cleaning personnel, emergency services. The antigen tests are 100% reliable in the first three days of an infection and 90% reliable in the subsequent days, which means the council can use them in instances when municipal employees may have been in a contact situation. These are the same tests as are being purchased by the regional health service (see Friday covid round-up for more details)
Today the Murcian government confirmed that it is purchasing 500,000 of these tests as reported on Friday.
Puerto Lumbreras council distributing safety info at markets and enforcing strict controls
Unfortunately, this is the type of control which makes shopping for food a very stressful experience as shoppers must stand in socially distanced queues and wait to be served by the vendors, lug their shopping long distances to only enter and exit via established entry and exit points and the whole experience is long-winded and unpleasant. Mazarrón also used this method for several weeks, but has now abandoned it, allowing shoppers to select their own produce for it to be weighed and the whole process is a lot more relaxed. Fortunately, most shoppers are considerate, allow each other space, and vendors supply plastic gloves for their use, it is a lot busier at 8am though as regular shoppers go early to avoid the crowds. Puerto Lumbreras council maintains that these strict conditions are necessary to prevent the virus spreading, although a case contracted at the local market has yet to be reported!(see image 1)
Mayor of Mazarrón in quarantine
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, has announced that he is in quarantine for being one of the direct contacts with the official who tested positive for Covid19 in the town hall, but maintains that he is "perfectly healthy" and will continue to work from home whilst observing the 14 day quarantine together with 6 other workers who have also been established by the health authorities as close work contacts of the positive case.
The town hall has re-opened with some extraordinary prevention and security measures in the main building and the Cultural Center will remain closed to the public until next Wednesday.
The Mayor has reiterated his call for a ‘ Covid Point ’in Mazarrón which would allow residents of the municipality to be tested without having to travel to Cartagena, as well as acting quickly on students who have been in the same class as a positive case," the Mayor said in a press release.
The Mayor is referring to the situation at the Miguel Delibes school in Puerto de Mazarrón; two teachers and ten students have gone into quarantine due to one positive being detetcted in a pupil (on Monday another pupil in a different class tested positive, see school info below)
"The safety of the students of our municipality is one of our greatest concerns," said the Mayor, "and we believe that things are not being done well. We have found cases of parents who have sent their children to class waiting for a PCR result, or even having tested positive, when they must be quarantined. More coordination is necessary between the Education and Health Departments so that this does not happen”.
Number of positives in schools of the region continue to rise.
As of Monday there are 279 pupils and 47 teachers in quarantine, with 32 pupils and 4 teachers having given positive covid tests since school began last week.
The latest schools to announce measures (in addition to those already published last week) are:
- La Aljorra public school (in Cartagena). 2 positive students in two different Kindergarten classes. There are a total of 16 isolated: 2 positive and 14 students.
