ARCHIVED - Monday Covid-19 update: over 85,000 cases in Spain as the death toll rises to 7,340
25 fatalities and almost 1,000 reported cases in Murcia
The latest official figures produced by the Spanish government show that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout the country had risen to 85,195 by 11.30 on Monday, with the number of related fatalities having reached 7,340 after another daily increase of over 800 (812 in the last 24 hours).
Another 5,231 patients were in intensive care (321 more than on Sunday), while on the other hand the number of patients given the all-clear has now climbed to 16,780. All of the totals continue to rise and the health services in many areas of Spain, especially in Madrid, are overwhlemed as intensive care units are stretched beyond their limits and field hospitals have been brought into use to cope with the continued growth in the number of serious cases. Only in a couple of Spain's 17 regions have the numbers of people in intensive care units shown any sign of stabilizing.
In the Region of Murcia the number of new cases reported on Monday is 67 and the death toll has risen to 25. Intensive care is being provided to 58 patients, and just 17 have been pronounced clear of the virus.
The nationwide count of 812 deaths is only marginally lower than the record highs reported over the weekend, and across the country it is confirmed that almost 10,000 medical professionals have been infected or are in preventative quarantine having come in close contact with contagious individuals.
Most frighteningly, regional and national health authorities continue to warn that the worst may be yet to come over the next two weeks, and it is now being assumed that the lockdown will be extended at least by another two weeks until 26th April. Whether the same is applicable to the economic shutdown imposed as of Monday 30th March remains to be seen.
The latest available data for the number of Covid-19 cases by region is as follows:
Andalucía: 5,405 (236 fatalities, 216 in intensive care, 155 recoveries)
Aragón: 2,078 (106 fatalities, 156 in intensive care, 174 recoveries)

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
