ARCHIVED - Murcia government requests protection against visiting second homeowners if lockdown is de-escalated early in Murcia
Fears of a second spike in coronavirus cases if holidaymakers head for their properties in the Costa Cálida
The health authorities and the regional government in Murcia are now expressing confidence that all of the criteria for moving onto the next phase of the de-escalation of coronavirus lockdown restrictions are now being met, an assertion backed up by the latest data released on Monday evening, but at the same time are concerned over the level of protection against a second spike in cases being caused by people travelling to second homes in the Costa Cálida as soon as it is possible for them to do so.
On Monday Murcia was one of the 8 regions of Spain in which no new coronavirus patients were admitted to intensive care, and at the same time the number of cases detected per 100,000 inhabitants is lower than anywhere else in mainland Spain. But if these figures are extrapolated then the implication is also that fewer people in Murcia have developed Covid-19 immunity, and this leads to worries over the national government’s stated intention to allow lockdown de-escalation to take place at varying speeds in the 17 regions.
Following the latest video-conference meeting between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the presidents of the 17 regional government, Fernando López Miras, the Murcia president, explains that he is anxious to avoid a scenario in which different regions could become “importers and exporters” of the coronavirus. In other words, if Murcia is indeed one of the regions which emerge from lockdown first, measures must be in place to “prevent us from becoming an area which is receiving infected visitors”.
In effect, Sr López Miras and Manuel Villegas, the regional minister for Health, are demanding protection for Murcia against people flocking to the coast to enjoy their second homes in the Costa Cálida, a risk which was underlined by the number of unauthorized visitors seen arriving in coastal towns and villages during the Easter holidays.
They also warn against raising false hopes among members of the public by announcing further de-escalations in advance, such as the intention to allow adults out to take physical exercise for an hour a day as of Saturday 2nd May. Far better, Sr Villegas warns, would be to wait for more data to accumulate before rushing into statements which may have to be withdrawn.
Bars, restaurants and beaches
For the same reason, during the video-conference on Sunday Sr López Miras did not raise the matter of potentially allowing people onto the beaches in July, a topic which has been the subject of considerable speculation. Tourism is a priority as Spain seeks ways in which to repair the damage done to the national economy by the pandemic, including the re-opening of hotels, bars and restaurants, but the Murcia president is of the opinion that these were “the first establishments to close and they will be the last to open”.
The four criteria which have been identified as crucial in order to press ahead with the de-escalation of lockdown by Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Alerts and Emergencies Coordination Centre, are the following:
- the ability to cope with a second wave of infections
- the implementation of mechanisms to monitor the next phase of the pandemic
- the availability of coronavirus testing in hospitals and primary healthcare centres
- the ability to detect all new suspected cases.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
