The Covid incidence rate has plummeted 80% in the Murcia Region in just a month
As of the last day of February, all indicators point to an end of the sixth wave in the Region of Murcia as the incidence rate has plummeted by more than 80% in just a month.
While spring is looking far more favourable, there’s no escaping the fact that infections have exploded over the winter months. However, the impact of the vaccination campaign means that the consequences have been far less lethal, and Murcia registered half the number of Covid-related fatalities it did in February 2021, the second deadliest month of the entire pandemic.
Coronavirus infections
The regional health authorities added a further 626 Covid cases on Monday, a significant rebound on the 93 infections recorded the previous day. It’s very important to remember, however, that in general, far fewer diagnostic tests are carried out on Sundays, resulting in data which can be somewhat skewed at the beginning of the week.
The picture becomes more positive when Monday’s data are compared to the same day last week, when 752 infections were registered, and the improvement is even more notable in comparison to the week before, when 1,052 positives were diagnosed.
In addition, the number of active cases in the Region has decreased to 10,168.
Of the 626 new cases, 227 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 111 to Cartagena, 32 to Lorca, 29 to Molina de Segura, 20 to San Javier, 13 to Águilas, 12 to Alhama de Murcia, 12 to Cieza, 12 to Bullas, 11 to Torre Pacheco, 10 to Cehegín. The remaining infections are distributed across the other municipalities.
Hospital pressure has unfortunately halted its downward trend and risen slightly to 252 (an increase of nine), but the number of patients being treated in intensive care has fallen by two to 37.
The Region of Murcia registered one Covid-related fatality on February 28: that of an 88-year-old man from the Lorca health area, bringing the overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,156.
Vaccination data
Since Spain’s vaccination campaign began in December 2020, 94.6% of the population of the Murcia Region has had a least one dose, a figure which is higher than the national average of 92.9%.

Positives diagnosed in the last 24-hour period: 626
