ARCHIVED - Murcia police aim to make their own facemasks with 3-D printers
4 officers have been diagnosed with Covid-19 and 38 more are in quarantine
As the coronavirus continues to spread in the Region of Murcia it has been made public that four officers of the Policía Nacional, one of the forces of law and order enforcing the emergency lockdown, have been diagnosed with the virus and another 38 have been placed in quarantine due to their having been in close contact with the patients.
Police officers’ unions continue to maintain that their members are effectively in the “front line” in the fight against Covid-19 but are insufficiently protected, with a lack of facemasks and other protective items being a major concern. In this situation the unions are seeking to limit the numbers of officers on duty at any one time and to install screens in police stations and motor vehicles in order to prevent the virus spreading between officers and members of the public, as well as ensuring that patrol cars and other vehicles are disinfected regularly.
The message being transmitted to the public and to the authorities is “We want to protect you, but for that we need to protect ourselves”, and in Murcia a crowdfunding initiative has been launched to raise funds for the purchase of protective equipment. The aim is to raise 3,500 euros in order to buy two 3-D printers and the materials needed to make facemasks and face visors.
At present, the police unions claim that the facemasks being issued to their members are surgical standard: that is to say, they prevent germs and bacteria from being transmitted out from the wearer, but do not stop viruses from travelling inwards. Instead, what is required are FFP2 or FFP3 standard masks, and the hope is that the investment by the national government of 432 million euros in protective equipment from China will see their demands met fully and quickly.
On this point, it is worth pointing out that various sources warn that well over half of the protective masks being sold online in Spain and throughout Europe at present are, to all intents and purposes, almost completely useless. Similarly, those who imagine that they can make their own coronavirus-proof masks at home are very probably deluded, as are those who are willing to buy the items produced by such “cottage industry”: the products may provide a welcome feeling of safety and security for the wearer, but unfortunately are unlikely to offer any real protection against infection.
As has been stressed since before the number of coronavirus cases began to spiral in Spain, the wearing of facemasks is generally recommended only for those who are known or suspected to be carrying the virus: at least equally important is the wearing of single-use protective gloves, frequent and thorough hand-washing and strict adherence to the lockdown laws which have now been in place throughout Spain for 12 days.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
