ARCHIVED - Murcia seeks simultaneous Covid-flu vaccine rollout this autumn

The Murcian Government wants the Department of Health to "speed up" the delivery of flu vaccines so it can organise a joint campaign
Murcia Regional Ministry of Health will today put forward its case for a simultaneous Covid-flu vaccine campaign this autumn at a meeting of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System.
The Ministry wants to "avoid inconvenience to the public and be more efficient in the administration of vaccines," explained the Minister Juan José Pedreño, and will ask the Health Department to speed up the delivery of flu vaccines so that a joint campaign can be carried out this autumn.
"We want to achieve greater efficiency but, above all, be able to protect the most vulnerable population. The administration of the fourth dose to the over-80s has been announced, but at the moment, we don't know how many we are going to receive or when, and this information is vital in order to prepare the necessary operation," added the Minister.
To get clarity, the Ministry will today request "enough vaccines so that the autonomous communities can cope with Covid and flu", as well as a clear distribution protocol that ensures equality between regions, together with a "common nationwide programme of vaccination".
But it's not just the delivery of vaccinations that the Minister plans to address during today's meeting. A shortfall of health staff and other "deficiencies" in the Region of Murcia will also be on the table.
"Once again, the main shortfall in our health system has been revealed: the shortage of professionals in our country, a problem that is accentuated in Primary Care, and which requires an urgent response to the serious threat of not being able to cover the retirement leave of medical staff due to the lack of specialists," said Juan José Pedreño.
"One solution would be to increase the ratios needed in our medical schools to train the specialists demanded by Spanish society and to ensure the future of our universal health system," he suggested, adding that "we must adapt to the current healthcare demands".
