ARCHIVED - New infections slide for the first time in weeks: Valencia Covid update May 24
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The 14-day incidence rate amongst over 60-year-olds in the Valencia region remains below the national average
Just seven days ago, all important Covid indicators remained on an upwards trajectory following the scrapping of masks in the majority of places and fiestas across Alicante province and the rest of the region.
Now, the latest data from the regional Ministry of Health shows a substantial decrease in the number of new infections, particularly in those aged 60 and over, and the 14-day incidence rate remains well below the national average. There are two additional patients in hospital compared to a week ago, but its a far cry from a leap of 74 hospital admissions reported last Tuesday May 17.
Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has confirmed 4,728 new cases of coronavirus since the last update on Friday May 20, when there were 6,111, significantly fewer than were reported during the same period a week ago when there were 5,708 infections over the four-days.
By provinces, 703 in Castellón (175,463 in total), 1,478 in Alicante (491,226 in total) and 2,547 in Valencia (764,678 in total).
Of these new cases, 2,227 are people over 60 years of age (down from 2,666 reported a week ago): 401 in Castellón, 704 in Alicante and 1,122 in Valencia.
Cumulative incidence rate
The average incidence in people over 60-years-old stands at 702.11 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days, below the national average of 848.62, and that of the Region of Murcia (1,367.77).
Hospitalisations
There are currently 769 Covid patients in hospitals across the Valencia region, 2 more than seven days ago, 36 of them in the ICU (down 4): 116 in the province of Castellón, 4 in the ICU; 266 in the province of Alicante, 13 of them in the ICU; and 387 in the province of Valencia, 19 in the ICU.
The Ministry of Health is no longer providing data relating to the number of active cases or how many people have overcome the virus.
Fatalities
A further 13 deaths have been reported reported in the last seven days (one less than last Tuesday) – seven men aged between 79 and 95-years-old and six women aged between 78 and 100. This brings the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 9,391: 1,097 in the province of Castellón, 3,569 in the province of Alicante and 4,725 in the province of Valencia.
