ARCHIVED - No sitting on benches during exercise period!
Sitting on beaches is also a no-no; the exercise period is for exercise, not play
As anticipated, the “zero phase” of the de-escalation process has thrown up one or two points for discussion, the first of which relates to the topic of exercising.
There has been a huge amount of confusion about exactly when adults are permitted to exercise due to the wording used in the state BOE which contradicted the verbal announcements made prior to its publication. As reported yesterday, some municipalities are allowing adults in outlying districts to exercise between 6am and 11pm in the evening, whereas others are insisting that all residents, regardless of whether they live in the urban town area or outlying countryside districts, observe the fixed hours established by the national government.
If you are not clear about how this affects you personally, read the article written yesterday which has gathered together statements published by the town halls of several of the key municipalities stating their position and how it affects local residents, namely Torre Pacheco, Mazarrón, Alhama de Murcia, Murcia city, Lorca and Totana. Click here to read the article.
A second area of confusion relates to what is and isn´t permitted during the exercise period.
Most of the 1.5 million residents of the Region of Murcia have been out in the streets during the last couple of days enjoying their first taste of freedom since the lockdown began, and although the Murcia region still has the lowest number of cases in Spain, there are still 534 known active cases, and most of these individuals should be observing quarantine at home and are not permitted to leave their homes (although in practice they could well do so as there are no physical barriers to prevent them).
The biggest worry for the authorities is that there are still many thousands of individuals who have called the helpline with Covid symptoms but have not yet been tested due to the ongoing lack of tester kits, but there will undeniably be other people who are Covid positive and don´t yet know it.
Even though temperatures are increasing, it is known that the Covid virus remains active for several days on both hard and soft surfaces (including on clothes), so the authorities are naturally concerned to prevent ANY contacts taking place which could facilitate the spread of the virus.
It is so simple to spread this virus: for example, on the sole of your shoe, hence the limit on how far we are allowed to walk or cycle and the constant spraying of public areas with disinfectants.
And the whole point of the exercise period is NOT to facilitate social interchange by allowing us to sit and talk to each other, but to keep us moving so we can exercise, not interact, hence the fact that some parks remain closed and signs are appearing on benches requesting that members of the public do not sit on them!
Imagine how many people could sit on a bench during the course of a day without the authorities being able to disinfect the bench after every person and how easily this could spread the virus should a contagious individual sneeze all over the bench before other people sat on it.
The public is also NOT allowed to sit on beaches at the moment, sunbathe on them or sit down with the kids and build sand castles for a pleasurable hour or two, although some municipalities, such as Águilas are permitting walks along the shoreline; the exercise period is for exercise only and further relaxation of the rules will only take place once the authorities are satisfied that the risk to the public has fallen.
Remember, there are still more than 75,000 ACTIVE, diagnosed cases of Covid-19 in Spain and in spite of being told to stay at home, some of these people will undoubtedly be walking amongst us when we exercise!
Many thanks to Andrew Edge for providing the photos of these benches in the san Javier municipality.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.
