ARCHIVED - Only 4 new coronavirus cases in Murcia on Wednesday
The number of active cases falls again and Murcia has one of the lowest contagion rates in Spain
Thursday totals for the Murcia region:
It has to be said, though, that whereas a few weeks ago it was hard to find any positive aspect to the Murcia data other than the fact that other regions of Spain were even harder hit, it is now becoming increasingly tempting to conclude that real improvements are being made in combatting the spread of the virus. On Wednesday only four of the 767 coronavirus tests performed gave positive results, the lowest figure since the start of the emergency, and in consequence, although only 5 more patients were declared to have overcome the infection, the number of active cases dropped to 831 out of the 1,721 so far reported.
In addition, the number of patients in hospital fell to 117 – ten fewer than on Tuesday – but unfortunately 3 more of them were admitted to intensive care units (taking the figure back up to 28).
There are still delays in the implementation of widespread testing in Murcia and of course there could well be a resurgence in the number of cases reported when that campaign finally starts in earnest, but with the Region’s RO number down to 0.84 the epidemic appears to be under control. In addition, Murcia is the region with the second lowest rate of contagion in Spain, according to new data produced by the Ministry of Health, with 24.7 cases confirmed last week per 100,000 inhabitants: only the Canaries performed better with just 15.4, while in Madrid and Castilla y León the figures were over 250.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
