ARCHIVED - Record day of Covid contagions in Murcia Region with 125 new positives
This brings the total number of active cases up to 1199
As much as the sun is shining, we all want to forget Covid and just enjoy the glorious days of summer before what will undoubtedly be a complicated autumn, it’s difficult to hide from the relentless upward movement of active cases in not only Murcia, but all of Spain as well.
Yesterday 3,172 new cases were added to the national total and during the last week new cases have increased by an average of 3,431 every day.
This is NOT scaremongering, unfortunately it’s a fact, although as has been said many times before, those who take sensible precautions, make intelligent decisions about what they do, where they go and how they interact with other people will necessarily influence their own risk of contagion.
For the main part these are easy decisions to make; go to a quiz night and enjoy yourself; whether you choose to wear a mask or not whilst determinedly clutching a drink all night is your decision; we’re all adults, we know what 29,000 dead means. A mask, a change of clothes and a quick shower are a small price to pay for peace of mind, but if we feel that we don´t want to live like that, then we’re absolutely at liberty to make our own choices. But that doesn´t mean that those who select choice A, or report the FACTS, are wrong, or are scaremongering.
For those who like to know what’s going on, regardless of whether it’s “positive” or “negative”:
During the last 24 hours, 125 new positive cases have been diagnosed in the Murcia Region. This is the highest amount ever recorded in a single day since the pandemic began in this region and the active total is now 1199.
1,147 of these people are at home in domestic quarantine; 52 are in hospital, 10 of them in intensive care.
The principal municipalities in which the 125 new cases have been detected are; 40 in Murcia City, 20 in Lorca, 13 in Cartagena, 10 in Molina de Segura, 6 in Totana, 5 in Jumilla and 4 in Mazarrón.
We now have a running total of 5,042 cases diagnosed in total in the Murcia Region, 3336 detected by swab tests and 1706 by antibody test,
Of the 3336 swab tests, 1,985 have been moved to the “recovered” folder.
Intensive testing still continues, with 1,574 PCR tests and 50 antibody tests on Wednesday.
Murcia city now has over 200 active cases.
As reported yesterday, the numbers of active cases in the City of Murcia are increasingly causing concern, although confining them is difficult due to spread of the residential areas and the high volume of business activity within the city.
The worst affected areas are the Barrio del Carmen and Floridablanca which are across the old bridge in the area close to the former artillery barracks and church of El Carmen, alongside the garden of Floridablanca on the opposite side of the river to the town hall and cathedral, as well as the districts of San Andrés and Puente Tocinos.
Mayor José Ballesta, insists that there is no cause for alarm and that although Murcia has about 200 active cases, the accumulated index is 41 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, when at regional level it is 48.5 and at the national level there is an incidence of 96 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The council has amplified the resources being dedicated to Covid testing as well as amplifying the track and trace resources helping to track possible cases.
Other municipal resources are being directed to the Covid situation; Local Police are going to houses in which patients who should be maintaining quarantine and are not answering the phone live; Social Services is helping in the distribution of food and medicine to people who cannot leave home; Civil Protection is supporting the PCR testing point in the El Carmen health center; and municipal cleaning services have intensified daily disinfections of playgrounds and sensitive areas.
Local police are also carrying out patrols in areas in which large gatherings habitually take place at the weekends, such as the La Fica fairground and the rambla de Torreagüera.
The council has also prepared an action plan for the autumn and purchased sufficient stocks of masks and gel to last for six months.
