Only nine communities in Spain remain above the very high-risk barrier
After two and a half months above the very high-risk threshold of 500 cases, Spain’s cumulative incidence rate has finally dipped out of this category, strongly signalling that the country is on the cusp of leaving the sixth wave behind. Hospital and ICU numbers have also plummeted this week, prompting the Ministry of Health to schedule a meeting later this month to discuss the pandemic de-escalation plan.
Continuing a trend that began a month and a half ago, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has fallen a further 14 points to stand at 472 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Thursday March 3.
Nine communities in Spain remain above the very high risk barrier. The Canary Islands today is the most affected, with 827 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Galicia, the Region of Murcia and Catalonia.
At the opposite extreme is the north African enclave of Melilla, where this marker stands at just 243, followed by Andalucía (282) and Castilla-La Mancha (283).
For its part, the Valencian Community has dropped another 38 points overnight and now has a 14-day incidence rate of 456 cases per 100,000.
By age groups, the highest cumulative incidence is presented by the group of young people between 12 and 19 years old, with 726 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by 20 to 29-year-olds (603) and between 30 and 39 (516). The lowest level of this indicator corresponds to citizens between 60 and 69, with 323.
The autonomous communities have reported 23,140 new coronavirus infections on March 3, a good reduction on the 35,892 cases registered on the same day last week.
This figure brings the total number of infections since the health crisis began in Spain to 11,078,028.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Hospital pressure continues its steady decline: there are now 5,989 people admitted for Covid, while 890 patients are being treated in the country’s ICUs.
These data translate into an occupancy rate of 4.82% for total beds and 9.70% in the intensive care.
Vaccination campaign
The vaccination campaign continues its steady progress, although it has slowed down noticeably in recent weeks. In total, 91.1% of the population over 12 years are now double jabbed, which represents 38,441,042 people.
In addition, a total of 24,184,184 people have received a booster dose.
With regard to children, 2,336,665 youngsters between the ages of 5 and 11 have now been inoculated since the paediatric vaccination campaign began on Wednesday December 15. As many as 1,891,890 kiddies have had their first dose (57.5%) while 642,080 (19.5%) are double jabbed.
