ARCHIVED - Spanish lockdown restrictions to be eased for adults as of 2nd May
The de-escalation of the confinement is conditional on a continuing improvement in the figures regarding the pandemic
Following the easing of the coronavirus lockdown in Spain on Sunday, which saw children out on the streets for the first time since the middle of March, the government has announced its intention to widen the de-escalation of the emergency by allowing the rest of the population to enjoy a taste of freedom.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez explained over the weekend that the next stage of the “new normality” will consist of all members of the public being allowed to enjoy the open air in company of other members of their household and to indulge in individual physical exercise, starting on Saturday 2nd May. However, this will still be within the national state of emergency, and at the same time the easing of the restrictions is of course dependent on there being a continuation in the recent improvement of the figures regarding the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in Spain: the latest daily update on Sunday morning showed a reduction in the daily death toll to 288, while the number of patients recovering was, for the third day running, comfortably higher than the number of new cases of infection confirmed.
Sr Sánchez also reiterated that the de-escalation of the restrictions on movement will be gradual and “asymmetrical”, meaning that in some parts of the country it will take place sooner than in others.
Further details of the government’s plans are expected to be announced following Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, and it is considered likely that the process will last until June: the Prime Minster once again underlined the need for caution in order to guard against a second wave of contagion, stating that “it is not a race to see who will be the first to re-open a shopping centre or a small shop”. In this context the national government will establish a set of conditions under which each region of the country will implement different phases of de-escalation, one of the most important of them being the capacity of each regional health service to deal with a potential “second spike” in the number of coronavirus cases diagnosed.
Pedro Sánchez also repeated his warning that the fight against the pandemic will be won only when there is a vaccine or a proven treatment for infection, and that will take “months”.
At present the state of emergency in Spain has been prolonged at least until 10th May, and it is expected that the government will favour a further two-week extension, taking it into the second half of the month. By that time, if recent trends continue, it will be possible to begin the first phase of re-establishing a semblance of normality throughout the country.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
