Temperatures reach record highs: Spain weather forecast December 11-14
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Thermometers will reach the mid to high-20s in large parts of southern Spain this week
Weather outlook on Monday December 11
The December long weekend brought very changeable weather to Spain. Temperatures rose sharply after a couple of chilly days and while the skies were clear and bright in the south, Galicia and other northern communities experienced a deluge of rain.
The good news is that an anticyclonic weather pattern will leave much more stable weather in practically all of Spain in the coming days. Daytime temperatures will tend to rise across the board, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which predicts values much “warmer than normal” during the first half of the week.
In fact, the thermometers could even tip 28ºC in parts of the southeast, in which case Spain is looking at the hottest December since at least 1940.
Monday December 11
The northwest of the country will continue under the influence of a humid Atlantic flow that will result in cloudy skies and abundant rain, but it should remain completely dry and mild in the rest of the country.
Daytime temperatures will start to soar in southern Spain and the evening will also be noticeably warmer in the southeast.
Nevertheless, several weather warnings have been put in place for rough seas caused by strong south and westerly winds in Asturias, Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia.
Tuesday December 12
An Atlantic front will enter the country through Galicia, bringing increased cloudiness and heavy rain that will sweep across northern Spain. Elsewhere, the day will be dry but with intervals of high clouds.
The mercury will take a dip in the extreme north and central Spain but the heat will continue to increase in the south, reaching a sweltering 28ºC in Murcia and hovering around the mid 20s in the rest.
Winds from the west and south will continue, with very strong intervals forecast on the Cantabrian coast.
Wednesday December 13
The persistent Atlantic front will result in light cloud cover on Wednesday with weak and scattered showers forecast in the south of Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, central Andalucia and the Strait of Gibraltar, which could spread into the surrounding areas.
But the real change will come with the temperatures, which will drop sharply throughout the country, more noticeably in the southeast.
Thursday December 14
A humid air flow from the north will affect mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands on Thursday, giving rise to cloudy skies and more widespread rain in Galicia and Cantabria. The Mediterranean area will also be somewhat unstable, with probable showers and even occasional storms in the east of the Balearics.
Temperatures will continue to decline in most of the country and in the archipelagos.
