The 6 best dog friendly beaches in the Region of Murcia 2023
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Canine friendly beaches are becoming increasingly popular and the Region of Murcia boasts six of them
More and more coastal towns are designating stretches of coastline to dogs, offering a safe space for pet owners to exercise their four-legged friends whilst adhering to a number of stipulations, such as picking up faeces and ensuring the dog is chipped.
According to a study carried out by the Red Canina website, there are currently around 100 dog-friendly beaches or, 'pet friendly' as they are officially defined, spread across all of Spain's autonomous communities with a coastline, except the Basque Country.
And half a dozen of these dog-friendly beaches are in the Region of Murcia.
Here's where you can find them.
1. Las Moreras Beach
Situated in the Sierra de Las Moreras in Mazarrón, this beach is about 500 metres long and 60 metres wide with coarse golden sand. Located in a semi-urban environment, this is the 'best rated' beach in the region, due in part to the surroundings and crystal clear water.
2. Las Cobaticas Beach
Located between Bolnuevo and Percheles, this natural beach is also in Mazarrón. More than a kilometre long and about 30 metres wide, it's one of the largest dod-friendly beaches, though its sand is mixed with gravel which can make it very difficult to access, according to Red Canina.
Staying in Mazarrón, this urban and stony beach is made up of a mixture of hard sand and pebbles. However, it tends to be quiet, with very few people and Its waters are crystal clear.
4 & 5. La Cañada del Negro and Cala de Mijo
These two beaches are a stone's throw away from each other in Águilas. The latter is small, 60 metres long and 10 metres wide, but it can be accessed any time of the year and boasts fine, grey sand.
Cañada del Negro meanwhile is a semi-urban beach, 150 metres long and 19 metres wide. Its sand is mixed with gravel and there are no other public services other than a car park with capacity for about 100 vehicles. It's also easily accessible by foot.
This is the only dog-friendly beach in Cartagena and is located between Isla Plana and La Azohia. It is the largest of all, about 1,100 metres, although it is also one of the narrowest, just 10 metres. It is made up of coarse sand, rock and gravel, although on the plus side, it's not usually very busy.
