Top 100 hotels in the world revealed - and one of them is on the Costa Blanca

Four hotels in mainland Spain made the prestigious list compiled by Europe's largest tour operator, TUI
The best 100 hotels in the world have been revealed, according to Europe's largest tour operator, TUI, and one of them is in the Costa Blanca's tourist capital, Benidorm.
A total of 17 Spanish venues, four of them in mainland Spain, have made the prestigious list selected for TUI's 2023 Global Hotel Awards that recognise establishments with the best satisfaction surveys of all the hotels with which the German operator works.
Of those Spanish hotels, 13 are in Balearic and Canary Islands, two are in Malaga province, one's in Girona and the fourth is in the hugely popular resort of Benidorm.
The tourist destination is home to 140 hotels, but one of its most distinguished and a favourite among TUI customers, is the historic Don Pancho four-star hotel.
Opened in May 1972, the establishment recently underwent a complete renovation and offers 256 rooms with terraces and sea views. The venue has hosted many celebrities over the years and is the official hotel of the Benidorm Fest.
The Don Pancho is located close to Levante beach, in the middle of Avenida Mediterráneo, one of Benidorm's main arteries and the first in the country to have a General Urban Development Plan (Plan General de Ordenación Urbana).
The hotel's first promoter was Manuel Torrubia, a local businessman who decided to build a four-star hotel, one of the first of its kind in Benidorm. His goal was to create "a prestigious hotel offering quality accommodation with sea views for all guests".
The grand opening was attended by the then Spanish Minister of Tourism, Alfredo Sánchez Bella, who declared that "the success of Benidorm and its change of model (from fishing village to tourist megacity) was a matter of state".
While making the global 'best hotel' list is great news for Benidorm, Spain has seen casualties with 11 less entries than in 2022 and five less than in 2020. A top 100 list was not compiled in 2021 due to the Covid health crisis.
Despite the data, Spain has maintained its second position in the ranking after other countries' ratings were also hit by the pandemic: Greece, came in top place with 27 hotels recognised (down from 35 in 2022), and Turkey ranked third, with 14 (five less than last year). In fourth place is Cyprus, which has nine winners.
Another explanation for the drop in favour, according to TUI, is the strong entry of countries such as Austria (7), the recovery of Egypt (6), the Maldives (6) and Italy (5).
