ARCHIVED - Torrevieja has largest Ukrainian community in Spain as Brits are toppled from top spot for the first time
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The Costa Blanca coastal town is now home to more Ukraine and Russian citizens than UK expats
Torrevieja has always attracted overseas residents and over the years its international communities have grown to the extent that nationals from 121 countries now make up 45% of the municipality's 90,000 plus population.
There has long been a strong Ukrainian community in Torrevieja, but the numbers have soared with an influx of refugees following Russia's invasion last year, so much so that for the first time, UK residents have been knocked off the top spot in terms of non-Spanish residents in the town.
For years, UK residents have held the majority in padron figures, but in the last six months, have fallen to third place behind Russia and Ukraine. And Torrevieja now has the largest Ukrainian community in Spain.
According to the Municipal Register, Torrevieja currently has a total of 91,731 inhabitants registered in its census, of which 54.45% are of Spanish origin (49,952), while 45.55% (41,779) are residents from five continents.
There are 44,624 registered men (48.65%),and 47,107 (51.35%) women, with a higher number of registered women than men in 2022 due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
In terms of non-Spanish residents, 5,771 of Torrevieja's population are registered Ukrainians, followed by Russian (4,932) and UK nationals (4,815) - the latter a far cry from almost 14,000 Brits in 2009.
Torrevieja has an active Ukrainian Association which was given a base at Habaneras Shopping Centre last April to collect basic aid, and Ukraine's Independence Day was marked with a day of celebrations on August 24.
After the two former USSR countries and the United Kingdom are: Colombian residents (3,139), who for the second consecutive year are ahead of the stable and historic Moroccan population (2,262), followed by Romanians (1,481), Bulgarians (1,432), Swedes (1,402), Belgians (1,236), Italians (1,079), Germans (1,079) and Spanish (1,079), Chinese (775), Algerians (738), Poles (709), Brazilians (639), Norwegians (586), Argentinians (589), Finns (551), French (534), Lithuanians (479), Venezuelans (479), Indians (473), Belarusians (470), the Netherlands (417), Cubans (347) and Irish (307).
