Torrevieja population surpasses 100,000 inhabitants, more than half of whom are foreigners

The city saw an influx of newcomers, many from Ukraine, as it grew to over 100,000 residents in 2024

Torrevieja began 2025 with a milestone: a population exceeding 106,000 inhabitants, marking an increase of nearly 6,000 residents in just one year. This growth solidifies the city’s position as the third most populous in Alicante province and fifth in the Valencian Community, trailing only Valencia, Alicante city, Castellón and Elche.

What makes Torrevieja unique is its demographic tapestry. Over half of its residents, 52%, are of international origin, representing 123 countries.

Notably, Ukrainian nationals now account for nearly 10% of the population, totalling 9,512 people. This figure reflects a significant rise, underscoring the human impact of the war and displacement in Ukraine.

Women make up 55% of the Ukrainian community, reflecting the broader gender disparity among recent arrivals. Ukrainians have overtaken long-standing groups like the British (4,708 residents), highlighting a shift in Torrevieja’s international composition.

Other prominent foreign communities include Russians (5,926 residents), Colombians (5,141) and Moroccans (2,961). Residents from Sweden, Romania, Belgium and other European countries also contribute to the city’s cultural mosaic, with individuals hailing from 123 different nations. Notably, two citizens from Dominica registered in the municipal census for the first time, further expanding Torrevieja’s global reach.

Despite this diversity, the rapid growth poses challenges. Infrastructure and public services are under strain as the city accommodates an expanding and multicultural population.

The population pyramid reveals that 19,674 residents are under 20 years old, while 24,453 fall between the ages of 20 and 40. The majority, 32,212 people, are aged 40 to 60, reflecting a significant proportion of working-age adults. Older residents make up 24,331 in the 60–80 age bracket, and 5,656 are aged 80 to 100. A small but notable group of 24 residents are centenarians.

Torrevieja’s growth is not just about numbers – it reflects larger migration trends and the city’s appeal to those seeking new beginnings. However, the influx of residents, particularly refugees, underscores the need for targeted policies to address housing, education and social integration.

As Torrevieja evolves into an increasingly international hub, its ability to adapt to these changes will define its future.
