ARCHIVED - Tuesday morning update 385 cases in the Murcia Region as field hospitals are prepared
As is only to be expected for probably another week, the number of cases of coronavirus registered in the Region of Murcia continued to increase as we entered the second week of lockdown.
The official total at close of play last night was 385 cases, 99 of whom are hospitalised, with 26 in intensive care.
The number of deceased remained at three, although the attention of the media focused on the decision of the regional government to take over a care home after the management concealed a case of Covid-19 from the regional health authority ignoring specific instructions that they must notify the authorities immediately if there was any suspicion of a case in the care home.
Instead, they concealed the illness and it wasn´t until the resident concerned was hospitalised and subsequently died, that the truth emerged. Immediately the regional government issued an order to take over the care home and the Military Emergencies Unit went straight in to isolate the building, undertake a deep disinfection, quarantine all of the residents and test staff, as obviously the remaining residents are at significant risk.
Since then a second patient has been admitted to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital from the same care home.
Some of the largest clusters of reported deaths in Madrid and other areas of Spain have been related to care homes, and the authorities have been paying special attention in the last couple of days to checking the veracity of reports from these establishments. Last night it was reported that the Military Emergencies Unit had carried out enforced checks in a number of care homes in the capital and had discovered the bodies of some elderly residents in their rooms, the homes having failed to notify the authorities of the deaths for fear of the economic repercussions and questions asked which will inevitably follow once the crisis has abated.
Three other cases have been reported in a care home in the Cartagena municipality, but all three are reportedly mild cases and the residents have been isolated and stringent checks carried out on the remaining patients and staff in the care home.
A field hospital has been prepared in a sports pavilion alongside the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia City and a second field hospital is planned for the pabellón Cagigal near to the Morales Meseguer hospital.
The IFEPA showground has offered its installations for a third should it be necessary to create extra facilities and the regional government has also requested that the Military facilities of the Escuela de Infantería de Marina de Cartagena in Cartagena be made available for the care of patients should it become necessary.
National totals for Spain
The latest official figures produced by the Spanish government were published at lunchtime yesterday and new totals won´t be available until lunchtime today, although the totals shown below are believed to have increased by at least 2,000 further cases.
At lunchtime on Monday the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout the country was 33,089 with the number of related fatalities having reached 2,182 another 2,335 patients in intensive care and 3,355 patients having been given the all clear. The situation is critical in Madrid, where intensive care units are now operating at double their maximum capacity and field hospitals have been brought into use to cope with the continued growth in the number of serious cases.
Since the last official update on Sunday 242 people have died in Madrid alone, pushing the number of deaths in the region up 1,263 and accounting for over half of Covid-19 deaths in Spain. There are now 10,575 reported cases in Madrid (and 942 patients in intensive care) but the reality is that there are many thousands more, as the system is so overwhelmed that tests are no longer being analysed immediately.
Thanks to the rapid and strict confinement of members of the public to their homes throughout the country it is hoped that the spread of the virus can be contained, although as stated many times before, the regional health authority is under no illusions that many cases have yet to show symptoms and it will be 2-3 weeks before we see a peak in case numbers.
As a result of this the Spanish government has extended the lockdown to 12th April.
The regional government continues to issue messages reminding the public of the need for patience during the confinement period which has been established during the emergency, recognizing that frustration is beginning to mount and that tempers will be fraying. It is important to remember that staying at home is essential in order to make the period of confinement as short as possible for everyone and reduce the number of deaths, and out on the streets police and the military are becoming stricter at enforcing the conditons of lockdown and fining members of the public who do not respect the lockdown. The image shows the sports pavilion alongside the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital which is being prepared for use in Murcia city.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
