A group of residents attacked police officers enforcing the coronavirus lockdown
Two men are being held in the cells of the Policía Nacional after they were arrested on 31st March for attempting to hold street parties in Alcantarilla, with one of them having been given bail of 10,000 euros while also under investigation for allegedly attempting to stab one of the police officers who detained them and for damaging a police vehicle.
A first party incident had occurred in the early hours of the morning of 29th March, when around 15 people began holding an open-air party despite the lockdown restrictions having been in force for a fortnight at the time, drinking and playing loud music in the street. Two days later a police patrol found another group gathering in the street outside their homes, although when the partygoers became aware that the forces of law and order were present they attempted to hurry back into their homes.
One of the men, though, stayed outside to confront the officers, threatening them and claiming that he had every right to do as he pleased. As the police arrested him they were hampered by glasses, ice cubes, flower pots and beer cans raining down on them from balconies and windows, and a second offender soon joined his companion outside in an attempt to retrieve his mobile phone, which he had left in the street when retreating to his home.
Both men, aged 20 and 47, now face a series of charges including civic disobedience and attempted homicide.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
