When the Christmas lights are turned on in Andalucia: Xmas guide to all 8 provincial capital cities
All of the region’s major cities are turning on their Christmas lighting between this Friday November 24 and Saturday December 2
Christmas lights in Granada
With the arrival of the last weeks of the year, Andalusian cities are getting ready to welcome Christmas, and one of the most highly anticipated traditions is the switching on of the Christmas lights.
In each city, the Christmas decorations vary, of course, and so do the dates when they are turned on. Over the past few years, the general trend has been to turn on city Christmas lights earlier and earlier. In fact, in some places you can see Christmas lights on from the month of November!
These are the dates on which the Christmas lights are expected to be switched on in each of the eight provincial capital cities of Andalucía, in chronological order:
Málaga
The capital of the Costa del Sol, Málaga, will officially turn on its lighting on Friday November 24 at 7pm. Puente Genil Iluminaciones Ximénez, the firm in charge of dressing up the city for Christmas, promises another unparalleled light show. The emblematic Calle Larios street will keep the same ‘Celestial Angels’ structure it had last year, with 16 massive angels measuring 4 metres each. Málaga remains one of the leading cities in Spain in Christmas lighting and holds its position in the ranking of Best Christmas Lights in Europe.
Cádiz
The city of Cádiz will begin its Christmas on Friday November 24. In response to the criticism received in previous years about the lighting, the new mayor, Bruno García, has assured that “a document will be made with new conditions” and the city’s lighting will be changed. This year, the lighting will be accompanied by musical performances and some surprises in the decoration.
Huelva
In Huelva, Friday November 24 marks the official start of Christmas with the switching on of the lights. This year, the celebration will coincide with the inauguration of the pedestrianisation works in the heart of the city. The Huelva town council has decided to take advantage of the commercial whirlwind of Black Friday to light up the streets with colourful displays. In addition to the lighting, an audiovisual show is expected, as well as activities designed especially for the little ones.
Córdoba
Córdoba inaugurates its Christmas lighting on Friday December 1, coinciding with the weekend before the Constitution long weekend. One of the main attractions is the light show in Cruz Conde, which has become an essential part of Christmas in Córdoba since its inauguration in 2019. With 1,562,467 low-consumption LED lights, the city will be illuminated with an arch that makes up the Cruz Conde show, along with 375 arches with 79 different motifs.
Almería
Christmas will arrive in Almería on Friday December 1 with more than 1.3 million LED points distributed throughout the city. The Plaza de las Velas will be the scene of the inauguration, which will feature an aerial show by the company Grupo Puja!, inspired by Peter Pan. This aerial theatre event, full of dance, music, acrobatics and pure fantasy, promises to be the magical start of the festivities in the city.
Granada
In Granada, the Christmas lights will be turned on the first weekend in December and will remain on until January 6. The city, which boasts the largest Christmas tree in Spain, will illuminate its streets from Monday to Thursday until midnight and on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and the eve of holidays until 2am. In addition, there will be a 55-metre tree, with an assembly of 82,000 LED lights and which is located in the Nevada shopping centre.
Seville
In the capital of Seville, the festivities used to start in the last week of November, but this year the event is being changed to Saturday December 2. Almost 300 streets and squares will be illuminated, highlighting the old town as the epicentre of the luminaire. Christmas trees will be placed in major parts of the city such as Puerta de Jerez, Santa Justa Station, Avenida Emilio Lemos, Plaza de Cuba, access roundabout to Torreblanca, Parqueflores (Northern district), Polígono Sur and Glorieta Forja XXI .
Jaén
The Christmas lighting in Jaén will take place on Saturday December 2 with more than 1.5 million LEDs, forming 911 arches, 4,360 garlands and five floor motifs. This light and sound show, which promises to be different from last year, seeks to energise the city centre and create a Christmas atmosphere that encourages people to go out into the streets.
