Work begins on extension of Malaga Metro

Work has begun on the extension of the urban Metro to the Civil Hospital in Málaga city. This Wednesday February 14, the first stone was laid for the first of the three planned sections, which will reach Calle Santa Elena. The project is expected to take three years to complete, with a budget of 45 million euros.

In addition, Juanma Moreno, president of the Junta de Andalucía, has announced that the second section of the extension will be put out to tender in June this year.

This first one will continue Line 2 – the one that currently links the Palacio de los Deportes with Guadalmedina – through Armengual de la Mota and Calle Hilera to end in Santa Elena, where the stop will be located, between the Pablo Picasso and Adelfa schools. The section will be 637 metres long, of the total 1.8 kilometres that the line will extend to the Civil Hospital.

This section alone is expected to add between 3.5 and 4 million passengers a year to the subway infrastructure. Once the entire extension is completed, the total number of users is estimated at 21 million. The total work to reach the Civil will require an investment of more than 200 million euros.

For the second section, if the tender is put out to tender in June as the president of the Junta has announced, it is estimated that the machines will start working to reach La Trinidad – as the second station will be called – by the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. This would leave the third section, which will complete the extension at the Civil Hospital.

Juanma Moreno, along with the Mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, the Regional Minister for Development, Rocío Díaz, and the regional government’s delegate in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, attended the ceremony to lay the first stone.

In a speech, Francisco de la Torre highlighted the Junta de Andalucía’s commitment to Málaga and said he was sure that “once the extension is finished, it will continue even further north [pointing to Ciudad Jardín and La Rosaleda], I am convinced of it”.
