ARCHIVED - 82 year old man in Yecla becomes 7th coronavirus victim in the Region of Murcia
Data regarding the number of Coronavirus cases in the Murcia Region continues to change, the latest modification being the death of a 7th patient in the Region, an 82 year old man from Yecla bringing the recorded totals to 477 cases, 33 patients in intensive care and 7 fatalities.
Yesterday three people died; a 45 year old man from Águilas, an 81 year old male and a 91 year old female.
All of these patients suffered from pre-existing medical conditions.
The next set of official figures will be released later this evening.
127 people remain hospitalised across the region, putting the regional health service under considerable pressure, and there are 350 diagnosed patients at home with milder cases.
Yesterday the region started to prepare field hospitals in sports pavilions closest to the major hospitals in Murcia City in anticipation of the case numbers rising.
However, there are fears that the region will struggle to cope with an anticipated rise in cases due to the numbers of health professionals already infected or quarantined, effectively putting more than 500 health workers out of action. 111 health service workers have now been diagnosed as positive for coronavirus and a further 400 have been put in enforced isolation at home having come into close contact with individuals who later proved to be infected and therefore contagious. All of these 500 people must undergo a quarantine period in order to remove the risk of them passing on the virus to health service patients. The regional health service employs around 20,000 people, so this represents a big dent in resource.
The lack of resource was highlighted brutally yesterday when the regional government revealed that there are more than 7,500 suspected cases in the region which it has not been possible to test yet due to a lack of testing kits. All of these individuals are believed to be positive and are being monitored via telephone contact, although are not confirmed "officially " as cases, highlighting the spread of the virus and reinforcing the need to respect the lockdown.
In some areas health service workers and those working in care homes for the elderly are staying in hotels rather than returning to their families after shifts, due to fears that they may pass the virus onto their nearest and dearest. Today further hotels in Yecla and Caravaca de la Cruz will be turned over to medical personnel in the north and north-west opting to remain away from their own families in order to continue working.
Thanks to the rapid and strict confinement of members of the public to their homes throughout the country it is hoped that the spread of the virus can be contained, although as stated many times before, the regional health authority is under no illusions that many cases have yet to show symptoms and it will be 2-3 weeks before we see a peak in case numbers.
The latest official figures produced by the Spanish government show that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout the country has risen to 47,610 from 39,673 with the number of related fatalities having reached 3,434 (after an increase of 740 in 24 hours) and another 3,166 patients in intensive care (530 more than on Tuesday). 5,367 patients have been given the all clear, but in a week when it is hoped that a peak may be reached in the number of new cases being reported the latest data continue to be less encouraging than some had anticipated.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
