14-day cumulative incidence rate leaps 73 points since Friday.
In just four days, 2,101 new Covid diagnoses have been recorded in Alicante province where the incidence rate now stands at 289 per 100,000 inhabitants - up from 216 on Friday.
The province is now classed as 'extreme risk' with Marina Alta and Marina Baixa the two comarcas which have experienced the largest surge in new infections.
Marina Alta: The average cumulative incidence rate is almost double the provincial average and now stands at 571 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Calpe remains the most affected municipality, with 318 active cases and an incidence rate of 1,363, followed by: Gata de Gorgos, with 961 cases per 100,000; El Verger, (807); and Teulada (638). Meanwhile, Denia, Javea, Benissa, Ondara, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell also exceed 400.
Marina Baixa: The average incidence rate has reached 406 cases per 100,000 people. Benidorm is the municipality most affected by the virus at the moment, with 356 active cases and a rate of 505.32. It's followed by Altea, with a rate of 403. The rate also just exceeds 300 in Villajoyosa, Alfaz del Pi and Finestrat.
Vega Baja: There are currently no municipalities in 'extreme risk', though many are still 'high risk'. Orihuela now has an incidence rate of 176; Callosa de Segura, 199; while the Torrevieja health area - including Pilar de Horadada and Guardamar - has an average of rate of 101 cases per 100,000.
General Hospital of Alicante and San Juan: 359 and 400 cases per 100,000 respectively.
General Hospital of Elche and Santa Pola: 355 and 375 respectively.
Elche-Crevillente (which includes Aspe and Hondon de los Frailes): The rate has risen to 322, though there are currently only four active cases.
The 14-day accumulated incidence rate across the whole region has now climbed to 495 cases per 100,000 of population; less than two months ago, the region was consistently reporting the lowest case rates in Spain with just 26 cases per 100,000.
